Mason jailed for causing harm

Accra (Greater Accra) 01 November 2000

An Accra Circuit Tribunal on Monday sentenced a 23-year-old mason, Gabriel Sologadzi, to 10 months' imprisonment with hard labour for burning eight thatched houses at Faana, a fishing village near Bortianor.

He pleaded guilty to the charge of causing harm, explaining to the tribunal that he had been drinking "Akpeteshie," and did not know what happened.

Prosecution told the tribunal, chaired by Mr Moru Ziblim, that on October 20 the complainant, Mr. Atsu Norvidzro, a fisherman was at the beach at about 2:00 p.m. when he saw his house burning.

He rushed to the scene and saw that the villagers had arrested Sologadzi for burning eight thatched houses.

Prosecution said fishing nets and other personal belongings of the victims valued at several millions cedis were destroyed by the fire. The residents handed Sologadzi over to the police.
