Tribunal fines salesman two million cedis for stealing

Accra (Greater Accra) 30 Nov. '99

An Accra Circuit Tribunal on Monday imposed a two-million-cedi fine on Kwadwo Agyekum Siaw, a salesman of DANNEX Limited, a Pharmaceutical Company in Accra, for stealing 33.8 million cedis belonging to his employers.

Siaw, 41, pleaded guilty to stealing. He will go to prison for one year if he fails to pay the fine.

The tribunal chaired by Mr Charles Quist ordered that the company should take civil action against the accused to retrieve the stolen money.

Police Inspector Joseph Anneh-Kwame, told the tribunal that the company employed Siaw about a year ago. It was detected this month that his debt accounts was increasing in respect of supplies that he made to customers of the company.

Inspector Anneh-Kwame said Siaw whose transaction was then investigated, could not account for 33.8 million cedis worth of goods supplied.

According to the prosecutor, Siaw told the Police during interrogation that he sold goods valued at 25.9 million cedis to a trader, one Pascal Meirizam.

However, the said customer was unknown to management and there was no invoice to cover such transactions.

Inspector Anneh-Kwame said Siaw claimed Meirizam had absconded.
