40m cedis for rehabilitation of Coronation park

Sunyani (Brong Ahafo), 26th November 99

The Ministry of Youth and Sports has voted 40 million cedis this year for the rehabilitation of the Sunyani Coronation Park.

Years of constant use and erosion have washed away the top soil of the turf, exposing giant boulders that have made playing football on the field quite tricky and dangerous.

The Regional Minister, Mr. Donald Adabre, who on Thursday visited the park to inspect the progress of work, urged the contractors to try and complete the project well before the commencement of the next football season.

"The park is virtually the heartbeat of Sunyani because of the many sporting programmes that take place here so it is important that it is completed on time in order not to deny the people their place of leisure," he stated.

Mr. Samuel Twumasi, Project Manager of Kassardjian, contractors on the project, said the first phase of the rehabilitation would involve the removal of the boulders, re-filling, levelling and re-grassing.

Mr. Twumasi said when this phase is completed well on schedule by February 2000, the park would have a turf that would be most ideal for football and other sporting events.
