More than 300 small-scale businesses get loans

Sekondi (Western Region), 26th November 99

About 375 small-scale businesses in Shama have benefited from the constituency's micro credit project since June, last year, Mr. Emmanuel Lamptey, Regional Manager of the National Board for Small-Scale Industries (NBSSI) told newsmen in Sekondi on Thursday.

Beneficiaries engaged in coconut oil processing, marketing of agricultural produce and traditional catering, received 100,000 cedis each, to be paid back within six month while those in the fish-processing sector were given 200,000 cedis each, payable in three months.

Mr. Lamptey said the beneficiaries belong to 29 co-operatives and the interest rate is 20 percent per annum.

Mr. Richard Dornu Nartey, MP for Shama initiated the Credit Project with 20 million cedis of his share of the MPs Common Fund, two hair dryers and one electric sewing machine. The initial capital now stands at 42 million cedis.

The project, which is intended to reduce poverty in the constituency, has the NBSSI as the implementing agency and the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) as the bankers.
