Soccer-Fans carry TV sets for power to watch Starlets match

Sunyani (Brong Ahafo) 23 Nov. ’99

Ghanaians' love for football was at its best at Sunyani in the early hours of last Saturday when soccer fans, whose areas had no electricity, carried their television sets to other neighbourhoods in search of power to watch the Black Starlets match with Uruguay.

Bent on watching the match live, scores of soccer fans, whose areas had a sudden black-out, went round begging landlords to allow them to use their facility to watch the under-17 JVC World Cup match between Ghana and Uruguay.

Some even offered to pay reasonable amount of money to the landlords for the power their sets would consume.

One of the fans, Nana Ohene Ntow, a banker who stays at Penkwasi, one of the affected areas, said there was no way he could have slept without watching the match.

"So when lights suddenly went out and I realised that other parts of Sunyani were lit, I swore that whether power is restored or not I will watch the match live."

Nana Ntow said some of his neighbours walked over a kilometre before getting landlords who were willing to do them that favour.

He said the Starlets spectacular 3-2 victory over their Uruguayan counterparts made the efforts of all those who struggled to watch the match live worthwhile.
