He gets four years for causing damage to properties

Accra (Greater Accra) 9 Nov. '99

An Accra Circuit Tribunal on Monday sentenced Michael Kwasi Akyia, unemployed, to four years' imprisonment in hard labour, for causing unlawful damage to properties.

Akyia, 25, pleaded guilty to three counts of causing unlawful damage to items valued at 2.3 million cedis.

The accused however, pleaded not guilty to a charge of threat of death and will re-appear on 8 December.

The tribunal chaired by Mr Charles Nyewolema, heard that the complainant, Miss Vivian Dorkenoo, a chop bar operator, and a mother of the accused, travelled to her home town, Anlo- Afiadenyigba on October 10, this year.

Before leaving, she asked two persons, who were witnesses in the case, to sleep in her room and to take care of her belongings until she returned.

The prosecutor said on October 30, Akyia who had returned from town started causing commotion. He knocked at the door where the two persons were sleeping, to ask for iced water and he was told there was none.

According to the prosecution the accused, not satisfied with the explanation, damaged the door and forcibly entered the room where he pulled a cutlass and threatened to kill them.

The accused chased them to a distance before returning to the house.

He then entered the room and caused damage to a Philips television set, an electric fan, wardrobe, standing water pipe, electricity and water meters, all valued at 2.3 million cedis.
