Parents of defiled girl charged for abetment

Tarkwa (Western Region), 5th November 99

A Tarkwa circuit court has charged the Gyaasehene of Salma-Dominase near Axim and his wife, the parents of a defiled girl, and 10 others of abetment of crime.

They attempted to settle out of court, a case of defilement of their seven-year-old daughter and have been ordered to appear before court on 9th November 1999.

This came to light when a 49-year-old farmer Yaw Osei, was being tried for the offence at the court presided over by Mr. Isaac Lartey-Young.

Osei was convicted on his own plea and was sentenced to eight years imprisonment with hard labour, without an option of a fine.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Lydia Vondee of Tarkwa Police said the accused, on October Four, lured the girl to a school park and had sex with her.

She said the following morning, the girl could not walk properly and when the mother questioned her, she confessed having had sex with the accused three times on a school park.

The accused in defence told the court that he was drunk at the time of the incident and pleaded for forgiveness.

He told the court that the Gyaasehene and 10 others had demanded one million cedis, and a sewing machine from him after he had been made to pay a fine of 30,000 cedis and 12 bottles of schnapps in settlement of the case.
