Fake Welterweight champion before court.

Abraham Tetteh, a 27-year old unemployed on Thursday appeared before a Tema Circuit Tribunal for allegedly defrauding Kwashie Davor, a technician of 20 million cedis.

He pleaded not guilty and was granted 30 million cedis bail with a surety to re-appear on November 16.

ASP Michael Yirenkyi told the tribunal chaired by Mr. R. C. Azumah that last February, Tetteh, introduced himself to Davor, as the African Welterweight boxing champion and would be travelling to the USA to fight Solomon Gozalene, the world's welterweight boxing champion.

According to the prosecution, the accused mentioned Prof. Azumah Nelson, former world super featherweight champion, as the promoter of the fight and asked Davor to be his manager.

Davor therefore expressed interest and later gave the accused seven million cedis which, according to Tetteh, was requested by Azumah Nelson for the preparation of his passport and other travelling documents.

On April 4, this year, the complainant received a letter purported to have been written by Azumah Nelson from Tetteh confirming that he (Azumah) had received an amount of seven million cedis, but that the money was not sufficient because the fight has been postponed to June 25.

The letter further stated that in order that the fight would not be postponed again, Davor should pay an additional 13 million cedis.

ASP Yirenkyi said, Davor later contacted Azumah who denied knowledge of the transaction. Complainant therefore reported the case to the Ashaiman Police who arrested Tetteh, and "in his cautioned statement the admitted the offence".
