Tribunal suspends further sitting

Hohoe (Volta Region) 4 Nov ’99

Members of the Hohoe district tribunal on Monday decided not to continue sitting in the present dilapidated building, describing it as a "death trap".

Mr Emmanuel Gbemu, the Registrar, told the Ghana News Agency that all cases have accordingly been adjourned until the Hohoe District Assembly provided a temporary accommodation.

Conducting the GNA round the building on Tuesday, he said the structure was built 67 years ago with landcrete. It was first used by the late Mrs Justice Annie Jiagge, a former Supreme Court judge, when she was a magistrate.

The walls of the premises have developed serious cracks, the ceiling torn out and could collapse during court sitting, he said.

Mr Gbemu said electricity was not connected to the house in spite of numerous complaints to the District Assembly.

Mr Obed Kissiedu, Hohoe District Chief Executive, who inspected the building on Tuesday, said the District Assembly Hall has been released for the use of the tribunal as an interim measure.

He said consultations were going on with the Cocoa Board to release their abandoned canteen to the tribunal since the board has only a skeleton staff and the canteen is no longer in operation.

Apprentice remanded for stabbing a mechanic

Accra (Greater Accra) 4 Nov. ’99

An Accra Circuit Tribunal on Wednesday remanded in custody an 18-year-old goldsmith's apprentice, alleged to have stabbed a mechanic with a broken bottle during a fight.

The accused, Nii Yartey Annan pleaded not guilty to causing harm and will re-appear on 9 November.

Police Inspector Joseph Ohemeng told the tribunal that the complainant, Mr Emmanuel Lartey, lives in the same area with Annan at Korle Wokon in Accra.

On October 30, Mr Lartey and his friends attended a naming ceremony at Korle Wokon and a quarrel broke out between them. Annan, had accused Mr Lartey of urinating on him, he said.

He said during the exchanges, Annan picked a beer bottle from a table, broke it and stabbed the complainant in the jaw, leaving him with a deep cut and multiple injuries after which Annan took to his heels.

He was however arrested the following day and handed over to the Police.
