Driver jailed for careless driving

Cape Coast (Central Region), 3rd November 99

A 31-year-old driver, Kwame Yeboah, who knocked down a five-year-old Philip Lamptey, has been sentenced to six months' imprisonment in hard labour for careless driving and negligently causing harm by a Cape Coast regional tribunal.

The tribunal chaired by Nana Osei Baffour had at previous sittings imposed a fine of one million cedis for each of the four charges of careless driving, negligently causing harm, failing to report accident and using a vehicle without an insurance policy.

The accused, who pleaded guilty, failed to pay the fine which were to run concurrently.

The tribunal also imposed 200,000 cedis fine on the owner of the vehicle, a "Hyundai" taxi cab with registration number CR 383 Q for allowing the use of the uninsured vehicle.

Police Inspector Richard Doku told the tribunal that on August 25 this year, Yeboah drove the car and knocked down Master Lamptey at a spot near Baakano.

Yeboah then sent the victim to the Central Hospital for treatment but failed to report the accident to the police.

Eight days after the accident, the mother of the victim reported the case and the driver was arrested.

Inspector Doku said during investigations it was detected that the vehicle had no insurance policy.

Nana Baffour advised drivers to always report all accidents to the police immediately and urged the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit of the Ghana Police Service to organise periodic seminars and workshops to educate drivers on road traffic regulations.
