B/A - Bofoakwa draw in anniversary match
Sunyani (Brong Ahafo), 2nd November 99
Tano Bofoakwa and B. A. United settled for a 1-1 draw in their special anniversary soccer match played at the Sunyani Coronation Park on Sunday.
But two disputed goals nearly marred the match played as part of activities marking the 40th anniversary for the creation of the Brong Ahafo Region.
In the end, Berekum-based class one referee, Joshua Mensah had to be escorted out of the park under heavy military cum police guard to avoid any molestation by the angry soccer fans.
Referee Mensah gave a doubtful goal for United to take a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute when dangerman Kwabena Dadzie's brilliant attempt hit the crossbar.
Again in the 65th minute, referee Mensah whistled for a penalty against United when the ball hit the hand of Bofoakwa's striker Anthony Mintah, who lost his balance and fell in an attempt to score.
United protested against the decision and the game was held up for about five minutes before Mintah converted it in the 70th minute for Bofoakwa's equaliser.
Both sides ended the game with 10 men each when Bofoakwa's Nana Gyamfi and United's Alhaji Abass were red carded for exchanging blows in the 75th minute.
The penalty shoot-out to determine the winners was cancelled by the organisers.
