Goldfields thrash Oly in Polio cup

Obuasi ( Ashanti), 1st November 99

Obuasi Goldfields on Sunday subjected Accra Great Olympics to a 4-1 drubbing at the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium to lift the ‘Kick Polio Out’ Charity Cup.

Ironically, it was the ‘wonder club’ Oly, who unsettled the homesters with a third minute lead when top marksman Charles Taylor slotted home a pass from Tahiru Braimah after the midfielder had done all the cooking.

The goal seemed to have infuriated Goldfields whose attacking men switched into top gear. Efforts by Ofosu Peasare and Lawrence Adjei saw the miners missing narrowly in the 18th and 20th minutes. They could however not be denied a goal in the 26th minute when a third attempt by lanky Kingsley Agyeman from close range zoomed into the net.

Olympics who were finding things tough substituted limping Billy Suley with Jonathan Abeiku before the end of the first half.

With Goldfields still on the offensive they raided the visitors’ area after recess and deservedly took the lead after five minutes through Ofosu Peasare. The striker, who was at his dribbling best, beat three defenders on the row, dummied Olympics glovesman Bismark Nyarko before planting the ball in the net.

Goldfields after this goal virtually reduced the game to a training session doing as they pleased with the ball. It came as no surprise when Foe Tetteh scored twice in the 60th and 89th minutes to seal Olympics doom.

Dwarfs lifts Osagyefo Cup

Cape Coast (Central Region), 1st November 99

Cape Coast Ebusua Dwarfs scored an authoritative 2-1 victory over Sekondi Hasaacas at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium on Sunday in a match that was to commemorate the 90th birthday anniversary of the late Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

By this win Dwarfs have lifted the Osagyefo Cup at stake on a 4-2 aggregate, having won the first leg a fortnight ago by a similar margin.

Hasaacas who hoped to make amends after the first leg shot ahead when the game was barely five minutes through Baffour Gyimah’s connection to Robert Mensah’s cross.

In the 11th minute Dwarfs nearly pulled even when Matthew Atsiogbe had Hasmal’s goalkeeper at his mercy but the enterprising player whose contribution saw Dwarfs fruitful in this year’s league shot wide. Two minutes later, the player made amends as his header beat Hasmal’s goalie.

In the 28th minute, Dwarfs Iddrisu Alhassan unleashed a direct shot from a freekick outside the box to win the day for his side.

Boxing : Ghana – Nigeria share title

Accra (Greater Accra), 1st November 99

Ghana’s Napoleon Alabi Lion and Nigeria’s Cyprian Emeti emerged as new African champions when they won their respective bouts in a Sikaprix International boxing promotions tournament in Accra at the weekend.

Alabi ‘Lion’ dethroned Ike Obi of Nigeria to become the new African welterweight champion in a 12 round contest that travelled the full distance.

The fight, which was characterised by time wasting and antics failed to impress boxing fans who forfeited their sleep to catch the scenes live.

The Ghanaian however jabbed and boxed his more experienced but tired opponent in the closing rounds to pile up sufficient points that made him 2-1 winner by decision at the end with a 118-112, 119-111 and 113-115 scores on the judges cards.

Nigeria’s super welterweight, Cyprian Emeti, nephew of former boxing hero, Dick Tiger, pummelled Ghana’s Robinson Kutsekey to submission in four rounds to claim the vacant African title.

Emeti first sent Kutsekey to the canvas with a terrific right, decked him twice in the third of their scheduled 12 rounds before a final right sting from the Nigerian ended it all exactly two minutes into the fourth round.
