Tribunal jails thief 10 years

Tema (Greater Accra) 31 May 2001

The Tema Circuit Tribunal on Wednesday sentenced a 26 year-old shoemaker to 10 years’ imprisonment for stealing 80 pieces of metal sheets valued at 40 million cedis.

Eric Nii Ashietey, who pleaded guilty, told the tribunal chaired by Mr Ringo Cass Azumah that, he committed the crime alone contrary to the suspicion that he could not have carried the roofing sheets alone.

Yakubu Alhassan, a welder, who is facing a charge of dishonestly receiving, pleaded not guilty and is on 20 million cedis bail.

The Prosecution said at about midnight on January 15, Ashietey entered the yard of Alakan Metal Company on the Spintex road and created a hole in the fence wall through which he pulled out 80 pieces of metal sheet each valued at 500,000 cedis.

During investigations by the company, Ashietey was arrested and he admitted the offence and led the Police to Alhassan at Agbogbloshie in Accra to whom he sold 20 sheets at 10,000 cedis each.

The Police could not, however, trace one Alhaji to whom he claimed he sold the remaining pieces.
