Stanchart loss pulls index down
Accra (Greater Accra) 24 May 2001
Standard Chartered Bank (SCB), the second most capitalised equity on the Ghana Stock Exchange after Ashanti Goldfields Company, lost a whopping 700 cedis to push the benchmark GSE All-Share Index down by 5.86 points as the bourse continues to struggle under heavy bearish sentiments.
The index, which gained 0.74 points on Monday, slumped 5.86 points to close 894.19 as against 900.05 points at the previous close.
There was only one price change - a 700-cedi loss by SCB to close at 21,000 cedis. SCB has maintained a stable price on the bourse and the loss has been the first since its share prices stumbled from 23,000 cedis last year.
Total volume traded increased from 88,700 to 328,200 with only nine equities out of 22 making sales. British American Tobacco, Aluworks and Guinness Ghana Limited led the pack of the biggest sellers, selling 150,100 and 87,700 and 63,800 shares respectively.
The change for the year declined at 4.22 per cent from 4.90 per cent. Market capitalisation fell heavily at 3,712.75 billion cedis from 3,723.83 billion cedis.
