Tamale
(Northern Region) 23 May 2001
There seems
to be a disagreement between cotton companies and cotton farmers in Northern
Ghana over the venue for a meeting to further negotiate the price of seed
cotton.
Whilst the
farmers want the meeting to be held at Tumu in the Upper West Region, the cotton
companies insist that the meeting be held in Tamale.
An earlier
negotiation ended in a deadlock when neither party wanted to compromise on
their positions. The farmers demanded
3,000 cedis for a kilo of seed cotton, whilst the cotton companies offered 1,500
cedis.
The
Northern Regional Director of Food and Agriculture, Mr. Jacob Wumnaya, who is
mediating, told the GNA that he is in touch with the leadership of both parties
to agree on the venue.
The General
Manager of the Ghana Cotton Company limited, Mr. Joseph Banafoe told the GNA in
Tamale that he had earlier met the chairman of the Cotton Growers Association,
Gwollu Kuoro Buktie Limann, at his village and he agreed that the meeting be
held in Tamale.
Gwollu-Kuoru
Limann who spoke to the GNA on telephone, however, denied ever agreeing to a
meeting in Tamale.
He said the
parties had earlier agreed to meet at Tumu on Wednesday and he could not take a
unilateral decision to change the venue.
Asked
whether they would compromise on their demand, the chairman said the farmers
had already compromised by reducing their demand for the price of a kilo of
seed cotton from 6,000 cedis to 3,000 cedis.
Mr. Banafoe
said a compromise by the Cotton companies would depend on the meeting.
He declined
to tell how much they would offer the farmers, but said, "something has to
be done".
