Musician claims ‘wee’ smoking enhances his performance

Tamale (Northern Region) 27 May 2000

Christopher Klay, a musician, told a Tamale Regional Tribunal on Thursday that he presented himself to the police for arrest at the "Bafana Bayana", restaurant, at Tamale because he did not see anything wrong with the smoking of Indian hemp as it inspires him to perform on stage.

Opening his defence before the tribunal, Klay said the stuff is a creation of God, which strengthens him spiritually and " I have the belief that the grass is for consumption."

Klay who was charged with possessing seven wrappers of Indian hemp, pleaded not guilty and was remanded in prison custody to reappear on June 8.

He said he was aware of the law on narcotic drugs, and therefore made up his mind never to misbehave after smoking and quoted the Bible (Romans 13), which he said gives government the authority to punish offenders.

"I am not ashamed of possessing the hemp and that explains why I did not deny or resist arrest when the police came for me", Klay said.

Prosecuting, Mr. solomon Kwase Atadze, senior state attorney in charge of Northern Region, said the complainant, Mr. Isaac Richard Aboagye,  who is proprietor of Bafana Bayana restaurant, at Kanvilli a suburb of Tamale, on November 14, 1999 was alerted that Klay was smoking Indian hemp on the premises.

He said when Mr. Aboagye went in search of Klay he found him smoking the stuff so he reported the matter to the police who effected his arrest. A search on him revealed seven wrappers of a substance suspected to be Indian hemp, of which he claimed ownership.

In another development, Alhassan Zakaria, a farmer, has also appeared before the tribunal for possessing 38 wrappers of a substance suspected to be Indian Hemp. He pleaded not guilty and was remanded in prison custody to reappear on June 8.
