An Accra Circuit Tribunal on
Wednesday remanded in prison custody, two persons who allegedly collected 42
million cedis from a student under the pretext of selling six plots of land to
him.
Benjamin Bortei Bortier, 54, an
electrician pleaded not guilty to defrauding by false pretences while Daniel
Amanor, 42, a farmer pleaded not guilty to aiding and abetting. They will
appear again on May 31.
The tribunal chaired by Mr Justice
Charles Quist, a High Court Judge, with additional responsibilities as Circuit
Tribunal Chairman, heard that in December 1998, the complainant, Master Daniel
Kojo Mensah, was asked by his brother and an uncle, living in the United States
to acquire plots at Baatsona on the Spintex Road for them.
The prosecution said, Master
Mensah came into contact with Bortier, who subsequently introduced Amanor to
him as his partner.
The two claimed that they could
get six plots for 7.5 million cedis each for the complainant and collected 42
million cedis from him and showed him the plots but when he started to develop
them someone came to challenge him.
When Master Mensah related the
matter to Bortier and Amanor, they gave him new plots, but a search at the
Lands Department revealed that the parcel of land was the property of the
Nungua Secondary School.

Alex Asamoah, a 34-year old trader,
who on Wednesday denied raping a 16-year old student, has been remanded in
prison custody and will reappear on June 14.
Police Inspector Emmanuel Boison
told the tribunal chaired by Mr. Charles Nyewolema, a High Court Judge, that at
about 10:00 hours on May 13, the victim was having her bath when the accused
entered the bathroom, pushed her to the wall, covered her mouth with his right
hand and forcibly had sexual intercourse with her.
He said Asamoah, who claimed that
the girl was his girl friend, after satisfying himself, told the victim not to
inform anybody and left the bathroom.
However, immediately after her
bath, the victim reported the matter to her parents, who made a report to the
Police. She was later sent to the hospital for medical examination and Asamoah
was arrested.
Asamoah is said to have told the
police that the victim was his girl friend and that they decided to have sex in
