Police Constable charged with stealing

Accra (Greater Accra Region) 11 May 2000

Charles Yeboah, a police constable who allegedly impounded a taxi cab valued at four million cedis and later sold it for 300,000 cedis, was on Wednesday granted two million cedis bail with one surety when he appeared before a circuit tribunal in Accra charged with stealing.

Yeboah pleaded not guilty to the charge and will appear again on 7 June at the tribunal, chaired by Mr. Charles Louis Quist, who ordered that a bench warrant be issued for the arrest of an accomplice, Bawa Salifu, a mechanic, charged with dishonest receiving but is on the run.

The tribunal heard that sometime last year, Mr Ahmed made a report to Yeboah at the Cantonments Police Station that his girlfriend, Adwoa Aduma, had stolen his 3.5 million cedis and took him to Adwoa's brother, one Kwame Danso, to whom she allegedly gave the money.

The prosecution said, Yeboah arrested Danso and detained him for interrogation, during which Danso confirmed the story, explaining that he used the money to purchase a Fiat saloon car, which had turned into a taxicab.

According to the prosecution, Yeboah collected the car from Danso and sent it to the police station but sold it to Salifu for 300,000 cedis. All attempts by Mr Ahmed to retrieve the car from Yeboah proved futile. He reported the case to the Special Police Command at the Police Headquarters who arrested Yeboah.

Investigations led to the arrest of Salifu, who admitted buying the car from Yeboah for 300,000 cedis.

Travel agent before tribunal for fraud

Accra (Greater Accra Region) 11 May 2000

A travel agent who allegedly collected 47.5 million cedis from two persons, under the pretext of securing American visas for them, on Wednesday appeared before a circuit tribunal in Accra.

Jeff Danquah, 36, pleaded not guilty to defrauding by false pretences and threat of harm. He was granted 15 million cedis bail with a surety to be justified until May 23.

The tribunal, chaired by Mr. Charles Louis Quist, ordered that a bench warrant be issued for the arrest of an accomplice, Abubakari Musah, 29, a messenger, charged with the same offence.

The prosecution told the court that Danquah who is an agent for Mutasa Travel and Tours at Asylum Down with Musah as his messenger, on May 24, last year, collected 35 million cedis from Ms Nyarko to enable him to secure an American visa and other travelling documents for her but failed to do so.

When Ms Nyarko and her brother called at Danquah's office to demand a refund of her money, Musah threatened to harm them with a knife.

In October, last year, Danquah again succeeded in collecting 12.5 million cedis from one Nana Agyei, with the promise of securing an American visa for his child but again, failed to do so.

A report was made to the Osu and Adabraka Police and Danquah was arrested at his hideout at Taifa in Accra.
