Driver fined two million cedis for causing harm
Accra (Greater Accra) 10 May 2000
An Accra Circuit Tribunal on Tuesday slapped a fine of two million cedis on a 39-year-old driver who inflicted multiple wounds on a plumber with a broken bottle.
Evans Tetteh Yemoh, who pleaded not guilty to causing unlawful harm, will go to prison for one year in hard labour in default.
In addition, the tribunal chaired by Mr. Charles Louis Quist, ordered him to pay compensation of another two million cedis to the victim, Mr. Robert Abbey, for the injury, or serve a prison term of three months in hard labour in default. He is also bonded to be of good behaviour for one year.
According to the prosecution, sometime in Aril last year, Mr. Abbey who lives in the same vicinity with Yemoh at La in Accra was sleeping when Yemoh woke him up and warned him not to play football on a field next to his house because the dust created during the game settles in his house and give him discomfort.
The prosecution said the accused did not take kindly to Mr. Abbey's explanations and this degenerated into a misunderstanding, which was resolved.
Yemoh, who was not satisfied with what went on, returned with a broken bottle and attacked Mr. Abbey from behind, inflicting multiple wounds on him. The complainant was injured in the right breast, shoulder and neck in the process.

2000
A 54-year-old unemployed, David
Quarcoo, has been sentenced to nine years imprisonment in hard labour by an
Asamankese circuit tribunal for stealing 14 goats.
Quarcoo, who is believed to be the
leader of a goat stealing syndicate operating between Accra and some parts of the
Eastern Region pleaded guilty and was sentenced on his own plea by the tribunal
chaired by Mr. Justice S.S. Appiah.
The tribunal heard that the
accused, together with other members of his syndicate who are at large, was
arrested at Noofio, a farming community near Suhum on April 9, when the taxi on
which they were conveying the animals broke down at the village and some youths
decided to help them.
The boys became suspicious on
seeing the animals in the front seat and in the boot of the car and reported
the case to the Unit Committee Chairman, Mr Solomon Quartey who together with
other members arrested Quarcoo and handed him over to the Police at Suhum. The
other members bolted.
