Driver jailed for two years for stealing car
Accra, (Greater Accra) 09 May
2000.
Corporal Ernest Donos Ofori of the
Fifth Battalion, was on Monday arraigned at an Accra Circuit Tribunal for
defiling a girl under-16 years. He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in
the sum of 10 million cedis with one surety to be justified. He is to re-appear
on Thursday, May 25.
The tribunal chaired by Mr Justice
K. O. Beecham heard that the father of the victim who is currently on
peacekeeping duties in Lebanon, left her and her brother in the care of their
mother at the Arrakan Barracks at Burma Camp.
On October 23 last year, the
victim's mother who is a trader left her two children behind and went to Dambai
in the Volta Region to purchase foodstuffs.
The prosecution said at about 2000
hours that day, the accused person who also stays at the barracks took
advantage of the woman's absence and went to knock at their door with the
excuse of buying some foodstuffs. When the door was opened, the he entered, sat
down and asked for some water to drink.
According to the prosecution, the
accused then devised means of isolating the junior brother of the victim, by
sending him out on three occasions.
When the accused got rid of the
boy, he forcibly had sex with her sister on the sofa in their hall. The
prosecution said the accused gagged the victim with a handkerchief to prevent
her from crying.
Her brother, who was returning
from one of the rounds, overheard his sister crying and called a playmate, and
the two saw the accused person in the act of defiling her sister.
After the act, the accused person
warned the victim not to disclose what had happened to anybody. However, she
told her mother on her return from the trip. The mother reported the matter to
the Military Police, which issued the victim with a medical form to attend
hospital for examination, treatment and report.
Even though the accused person
denied the allegation upon interrogation, the medical report indicated that the
victim was sexually assaulted.
