Driver takes advantage of neighbour's absence to defile daughter

Wa (Upper West), 7th May ‘99 –

Mr Salifu Yakubu, a 33-year-old driver who took advantage of the absence of his co-tenant and defiled her 12-year-old schoolgirl has been arrested by the Wa police.

He bolted after committing the crime.

Inspector Dorkpoh said the suspect and his wife live in the same house with one Madam Comfort Honu, mother of the victim.

He said, last month, Madam Honu travelled to Anfoega in the Volta region for the Easter festivities, leaving behind the daughter and her father.

Yakubu took advantage of her absence and had intercourse with the victim on three occasions but warned her not to tell her father.

He said it was only when the victim's mother returned from her hometown that she detected some bloodstains in her daughter's dress.

When she questioned her, she mentioned Yakubu as having had sex with her.

The victim's parents reported the matter to the Police, and the girl was sent to the Wa government hospital for medical examination, the results of which confirmed that she had been carnally known.

Yakubu has been granted two million cedis Police enquiry bail with a surety and asked to report twice weekly at the Police station pending further investigations.

Man, 39, charged with raping JSS girl

Agona Swedru (Central Region), 7th May ‘99 –

An Agona Swedru Circuit court has remanded Anthony Kofi Awuah Donkor, a guard of the Agona district assembly, in prison custody for allegedly raping a 15-year-old JSS One girl.

Donkor, 39, pleaded not guilty to the charge and will reappear in court on May 14.

Prosecuting, Police Sergeant Comfort Buabeng told the court, presided over by Mr Tom Bentil, that the accused, who is a friend of the girl's father on April 13, was reported to have punished the girl for being disrespectful.

The prosecution said the accused went to the grandmother of the girl again without the knowledge

of her mother, saying he had been asked to come and punish her.

He then dragged the girl to his house, tied her hands and legs and shaved her head when

they entered his room.

The accused then stuffed her mouth with a piece of cloth and forcibly had sex with the girl.

After the act, Donkor allegedly took a bucketful of water, poured it on the girl and escorted

her to the house.

According to the prosecution, a medical report on the girl revealed that Donkor had sexually assaulted her.
