Accra (Greater Accra) 27 March 2001

The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) said it would embark on a catch-them-young programme in the country to identify and develop talents in the various discipline for the next Olympic and Commonwealth games.

Mr B. R. Ayisi, Administrative Manager of the committee told the GNA in Accra that there is the need to train young athletes to take over from the current ones, most of whom are ageing.

He admitted that part of the problem of the country's recent poor performance at the games could be due to "old age" and added "we must find immediate replacement in the next few years".

As part of the outreach programme 25 coaches each in three disciplines would undergo a special course in May, August and November this year.

The disciplines are Badminton, Tae Kwando and Weightlifting.

The course, which would last for a period of 10 days, would be under the tutelage of expatriate instructors.

On completion, the coaches would be sent to the regions and districts to unearth young talents and groom them for major competitions.
