Timeware UK to establish manufacturing plant in Ghana

Accra (Greater Accra) 16 March 2001

Timeware Limited, a British Time Management Computer-Manufacturing firm, is to establish a plant in Ghana.

Mr. Simon Birchall, Managing Director, announced on Thursday that the plant which, would be completed in the next 18 months, would serve the African market with its products.

He made the announcement at a press briefing in Accra to introduce Timeware equipment and their functions to the media.

"I am pleased to inform you that Ghana is the first country in Africa where our company has decided to establish a branch not only to import our products for sale but to set up a manufacturing industry so that the rest of Africa could benefit from the technology."

Mr. Birchall said the choice of Ghana was based on the political stability and the gateway status the country enjoys, adding that information technology and human resource capacity of the country are also very appreciable.

He said an initial staff of 50 would be trained and employed by the company and that an appreciable percentage of raw material would be sourced in Ghana where 90 per cent of the work would be done.

This, he said, would greatly assist the government to address the employment problem and his company intends to take advantage of the free zones scheme to participate in the development process of Ghana.

Mr. Birchall said a detailed research conducted into the time management systems and level of time wastage at work places in the country revealed striking results, which constitute enough reason for the introduction of the technology to ensure effective time management.

"It is our hope that this technology will help do away with the traditional concept of "African Time", which is not too productive as far as time management is concerned," he said.

Mr. Sam Atakorah, Managing Director of Timeware Ghana, said the technology is designed to automatically provide records of a user organisation's personnel, attendance and cost and also prevent unauthorised persons from entering restricted areas and files.

He said the time security technology comprises a device called Timeware 5, a personal computer and a telephone, which when connected to a network, would enable employers to monitor from a central point the attendance and personal details of their workers nation-wide.

"The system eliminates all human interventions in the management of time and therefore automatically stems fraud, deletes ghost names and helps to determine the salary of each worker based on the number of hours one works over a given period," he said.

Mr. Atakorah, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of First Technology Limited, said the Timeware system helps employers to determine the cost each worker incurs as per the productive hours wasted.

Mr. Atakorah said the company has since 1986 provided effective time management solution to over 6000 customers in Europe, America and Asia, adding that in Ghana, Alitalia, Gateway Service, Unilever, British American Tobacco among other companies have been using the technology for the past three months.
