Kuffour - I'm not Munich's slave
Hamburg (Germany) 14 March 2001
Bayern Munich defender Samuel
Kuffour, commenting on a fine imposed on him by club officials for allegedly
discussing a move to Barcelona, said he was not a "slave" of his
club.
"I am not the slave of
Bayern. I have every right to go to a restaurant after training. In addition,
(manager Uli) Hoeness doesn't even know what we talked about," Kuffour was
quoted as saying by Bild newspaper Tuesday.
Kuffour was fined 10,000 marks
(4,700 dollars) after it was discovered that he met with Barcelona advisor
Bernd Schuster in a local restaurant at the weekend.
Barcelona are allegedly willing to
pay 36 million marks for the Ghanaian defender, whose contract in Munich runs
until 2003. But Bayern are unwilling to let the 24-year-old go as he is to play
an important role in a future younger Munich team.

Victory to establish soccer Academy
Accra (Greater Accra) 14 March
2001
Mighty Victory Sporting Club, an
Accra-based colts club is to collaborate with L Sports, a FIFA agent and sports
wear company based in Austria, to establish a soccer Academy in the country
soon.
But this is subject to the
Minister of Youth and Sports, Mallam Yusif Isa's approval of a letter of intent
by Mr R.S.A Young, Chairman of the club.
Mr Young told the GNA Sports in
Accra on Monday that the contract came two years ago after FIFA had studied his
Curriculum Vitae (CV) and made recommendations to the company to help him in
that direction.
He said consequently, the company
wrote to him with the promise of assisting him with two million dollars seed
money.
Mr Young who has been manager of
the club for the past 32 years however, expressed regret that ever since the
letter arrived about two years ago, the sports authorities have refused to give
him the necessary assistance.
It would be recalled that at the
Gbadegbe Commission in 1999, it came to light that, Hearts of Oak, were asked
to pay Mighty Victory an amount of 40,000 dollars being their share of Stephen
Appiah's transfer fee to Italian club Udinese in 1997.
Mr Young said he petitioned FIFA
on the issue.
"Perhaps it was after FIFA
had studied the CV that they recommended me to L Sports", he said.
Mr Young said, juvenile soccer has
produced great stars in the country citing the 18 local professional squad that
held the Super Green Eagles of Nigeria to a 0-0 drawn game.
