Hearts wallop Kwaebibirem

Accra (Greater Accra) 24 March 2000

Defending champions, Accra Hearts of Oak, continued with their expedition to humiliate any team that came their way when they mesmerised Asuom Kwaebibirem United to a stunning 5-0 defeat at Asuom in their outstanding 3rd Week Premier League encounter on Thursday.

And as if to tell how deadly their attacking machinery is, each of the five forwards had a goal in the cricket score.

It was daredevil, Ishmael Addo who opened the scoring for the Phobians and newfound, Charles Taylor took the opportunity to register his first.

Charles Allotey, Osmanu Amadu and 1998 goal king, Joe Famiyeh hit the back of the net in turns to give Hearts their heaviest win in this year's league.

The victory puts the rainbow lads back to the top of the table, which was temporarily held by Bofoakwa Tano after last Sunday's matches.

At the Sekondi Gyandu Park, Sekondi Hasaacas came from a goal down to triumph over Cape Coast Ebusua Dwarfs in another outstanding encounter.

Dwarfs went ahead in the in the 15th minute through Rashid Iddi when the forward intercepted a pass from Hasaacas’ Yaw Serbeh, meant for his goalkeeper to hit a powerful one into the net.

10 minutes later, Hasmal came up with the equaliser through Frank Turkson’s connection to Atta Yawson's cross.

The Sekondi lads were hit with a disaster soon after levelling up as dangerman, Nana Ghanasah was red-carded for a reckless tackle on Rashid Awal.

Even with their numerical disadvantage, Hasmal proved purposeful with their incessant raids on their opponent's goal area and deservedly went ahead in the 48th minute when Turkson dribbled a host of defenders before chipping one past goalkeeper Issaka of Dwarfs.

Still probing for more goals, the intelligent forward hit a hat-trick when he netted his side's third in the 58th minute.

Dwarfs launched a last minute face-saving onslaught and succeeded with another goal in the 80th minute when hardworking Matthew Attiogbe beat Owusu Banahene with a low grounder.

Wonder club, Accra Great Olympics stand likely to incur the wrath of the GFA after it failed to honour its outstanding league match against King Faisal at the Kumasi Sports Stadium on Thursday.

After waiting for nearly two hours at the Stadium, Referee Joseph Quansah blew his whistle to signal that the match could not be honoured to the disappointment of Faisal's chairman, Alhaji Grunsah and his boys.

According to Alhaji Grunsah, it was disheartening that after spending so much time and money to camp the players the match could not come on.

The monarch's chairman said that in accordance with the FA's disciplinary rules Faisal must be awarded with the three points at stake and three goals, if Olympics is found to have faulted.

In which case Olympics loses the three points at stake plus a deduction of another three from their points build up.

Soccer- Herbert Mensah assaults Hearts official

Accra (Greater Accra) 24 March 2000.

Mr Kwadwo Twum-Boafo, a Management Board member of Accra Hearts of Oak, on Thursday alleged that he was assaulted by Mr Herbert Mensah, Board Chairman of Kumasi Asante Kotoko.

He told a press conference in Accra that he has reported the case to the Osu Police, and was referred to the police hospital, where a medical report confirmed that he has pains in the right side of the neck.

Giving an account of what happened, Mr Twum-Boafo said he was instructed by Mr Harry Zakkour, Chief Executive of Hearts, to accompany him to a meeting of chairmen of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) with him on Friday, 17 March at the Accra Sports Stadium.

He said without any warning, Mr Mensah grabbed him by the arm and threatened to  kill him for allegedly saying something derogatory about him (Mensah).

"As the people present tried to separate us, Mr Mensah seemed to get more angry at which time he removed his jacket to give to Kwame Amoah-Bosompem, Accra representative of Kotoko, and proceeded to grab me by the belt of my trousers and the right side of my neck. As he started squeezing, he warned that if I tried to resist he will fuck me up", he said.

He said as a result of the assault he now suffers from serious health condition called ''cervical spondylosis''.

"The right side of my body is numb, especially the muscles in my arm, neck, right quadriceps and around my ear'', said Mr Twum-Boafo who addressed the press conference in a neck brace.

He said he would shortly leave for the U.S to see a specialist and if it  is ascertained that there further serious physical deterioration, "I will definitely be seeking restitution in the form of civil damages from Herbert  Mensah through the law court."

Mr Twum-Boafo who showed newsmen his medical report, said "this is not a Hearts versus Kotoko issue, and as such, retroactive violence will do no good to the already tarnished image of Ghana soccer''.

He appealed to Hearts fans to be calm and put their faith in the system that administers justice. GHALCA members including Harry Zakkour denied the incident happened.
