GBA national executives visit Upper East region.

Bolgatanga (Upper East), 21 March 2000

The Upper East Regional Minister, Alhaji Amidu Sulemana, has called on the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) to direct more of its human resources towards helping the government to find solutions to problems confronting the nation.

He said the association has the right calibre of people whose resourcefulness if properly tapped, could move the country forward in its developmental efforts.

Alhaji Sulemana expressed these concerns when the national president of GBA, Mr Joseph Ebow Quarshie and three other national executive members called on him on Thursday, as part of their tour of the region.

He said lawyers should not only see their role in contributing to national development as that of criticising the actions or inaction of government, saying "the time has come for you to make constructive policy proposals for government to consider".

The Regional Minister expressed appreciation to the GBA for its significant contribution to the promotion of the rule of law and constitutional democracy in the country.

Mr Ebow Quarshie said the membership of the GBA cuts across various political persuasions and gave the assurance that the association would not unnecessarily meddle in party politics.

He said contrary to the views of many that the association is always critical of government, what it seeks to do is to protect the legal profession and the fundamental human rights of the people as enshrined in the Constitution.

Mr Quarshie noted that the bar has in the past commended the government on some of its polices where praise was due, and that it would continue to make suggestions on how the country can sustain its young democracy.

The GBA executive members, who had already visited the Brong Ahafo and Northern regions, included Mr Ayikoi Otoo, National Secretary, Mr Kwesi Cab-Addae, National Public Relations Officer, and Mr Benson Nutsukpui, National Assistant Secretary.
