Nadowli (Upper West) 13 March 2000
Mr
Samuel Suglo, Nadowli District Chief Executive, has called on the National Commission
on Culture and traditional authorities to be circumspect in their bid to review
some of the outmoded cultural practices so as to avoid negative repercussions.
"Much
as we want to ensure that those aspects of our culture, which are dehumanising
and inhibit progress are eradicated, we should as well ensure that such moves
do not mar and adulterate the beauty of our rich culture," he said.
Mr Suglo, who was speaking at the
Wa-Nadowli Zonal Cultural Festival at Nadowli, on Saturday, urged them to
improve on the aspects of culture that promote development.
District assemblies should support their
various cultural troupes to portray the rich culture of the people and organise
frequent cultural festivals as a way of fostering unity among feuding ethnic
groups.
Mr Charles Dipke, Regional Director of
Centre for National Culture, called on craftsmen to develop new ideas and
concepts that will improve their products to meet the demands of the
international market.
The festival apart from preparing the
groups for the National Festival of Art and Culture, NAFAC 2000, slated for Ho
towards the end of the year, was also to discover new talents, arts forms and
technology in the region.
It
is also to create in-depth cultural awareness in the region and enable the
people to be conscious of their cultural practices.
The festival, the first in a series to be
organised, featured eight dance and poetry recital groups from the two
districts.
