The 24th National Milo Cross Country Ends In Bolgatanga

 

Bolgatanga (Upper East) 1 March 2000

 

The 24th National Milo Cross Country Championships, dubbed ''the millennium championship'' has been held at Bolgatanga in the Upper East region.

It had as its theme ''Building Our Nation Higher, Faster, Longer And Fair Through Sports.''

The annual athletic event attracted 127 competitors from all the country's ten regions as well as the Ghana Armed Forces, Police, Customs, Excise and Preventive Service, (CEPS), Fire Service, Immigration and the Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA).

The women's race of 10 kilometres was won by Millecent Boadi of CEPS in a record time of 36 minutes,11:60 seconds, while Charity Boahema of Ashanti region came second in 38 minutes, 13:60 seconds and Joyce Ocansey of the Police Service

placed third.

In the men's race of 15 kilometres, Richard Nifah of the Ghana Armed Forces finished first in 46 minutes, 43:4 seconds, while the second and third places

went to Timothy Mandela of Greater Accra region and Salifu Moro of Upper East region respectively.

The Police Service emerged the overall winners in the men's division with 28 points, followed by the Ghana Armed Forces and Central region respectively.

The Volta region took the first position in the women's race with 17 points, the Police Service came second and Ashanti region ended in third place.

In an address, Alhaji Amidu Sulemana, Upper East regional Minister, called on sportsmen and women to let the discipline that prevails in sports extend to all other endeavours in their lives.

The acting Chief Executive of the National Sports Council (NSC) Colonel George Brock, said the government would continue to provide the necessary support for sports development in the country.

He thanked Nestle Ghana Limited, sponsors of the championship, for their support and expressed the hope that they would continue to sponsor future programmes.

The next Milo cross-country champion has been slated for  Sekondi/Takoradi in the Western region next Year.
