Koforidua zone institutes bursary for best athletes

Koforidua (Eastern Region), 23 March 

The Koforidua Zone Second Cycle Schools Sports Association has instituted a bursary of 100,000 cedis each, a term, for the best female and male athletes in the area.

The bursary, which takes effect from next term, was announced at the end of the 13th annual Koforidua Zone Second Cycle schools athletics competition which ended at Koforidua at the weekend.

The first receipients are Gene Torto of Koforidua Secondary Technical School (SECTEC), who was adjudged the best male athlete of the competition and Millicent Boakye of New Juaben College of Commerce (NJUACOCO), the best female athlete.

Torto won in three events, high jump, 110 metres hurdle and the long jump.

Millicent was first in 100, 200 and 400 metres and anchored for her school to win the 4x100 and 4x400 metres.

In all, 12 records --six each in the boys and girls divisions were set.

Berekum Secondary School are boys champions.

Berekum (Brong Ahafo), 23 March 

The six-day Brong Ahafo schools and colleges zone "C" sports festival, held at the Berekum Secondary School (BESS), ended at the weekend with BESS winning the boy's athletic championship trophy with 138 points.

Berekum Presbyterian Secondary School (PRESEC) followed with 111 points and Nsoatre Sacred Heart Secondary School (ASHESS), third with 85 points.

Other participants, Dormaa Secondary School (DORMASS) 71 points, Sampa Nafana Secondary (NASEC) 30 points, Biadan Methodist Technical (MESTECH) 19 points and Goka Secondary/Technical (GOSEC/TECH) 15 points.

Jinijini Secondary School (JINSS), Wamanafo Secondary School (WAMSEC) and Nkrankwanta Secondary School (NKRANSEC), all had eight points Each, Mansen Secondary (MANSEC), seven points and Drobo Secondary School (DROSEC), four points followed in that order.

In the girls division, BESS again took the first position with 116 points, ASHESS were second with 109 points and DORMASS, third with 104 points. PRESEC had 64 points, Buokrom our Lady of Providence Vocational School (OLP), 34 points, GOSEC/TECH, 26 points, NASEC, 24 points, WAMSEC 10 points, and MESTECH, nine points.

PRESEC and JINSS had six points each and MANSEC and NKRANSEC had no point to follow in that order.

BESS scored a 1-0 win over PRESEC in the soccer finals to emerge the soccer champions. The lone goal was scored by inside right Mensah Barnes in the 10th minute.

Dormaa won both the boys' and girls' volleyball final encounters.

They beat PRESEC 2-1 in the boys match while their girls won 2-0 over BESS.

Master John Paintsil of PRESEC was adjudged the best athlete in the boys' division while Mercy Twenewaa of Goka Secondary/Technical, the best in the girls division.

Master Emmanuel Tawiah of SAHESS won the boys cross-country race and Mercy Twenewaa of GOSEC/TECT the girls division.

Master Thommy Baah of BESS was adjudged the best soccer player.

The festival was aimed at selecting a team to represent the zone in this year's regional super zonal sports festival, scheduled for next June in Berekum.

In his closing address, the guest of honour, Mr Kwadwo Boateng, District Chief Executive for Dormaa, advised the selected athletes and players to train harder to enable them to bring more laurels to the zone in the Berekum festival.

Games-Nothern sector inter-college sports competition takes off

Navrongo (Upper East), 23 March  

The third annual inter-college sports competition of the Nothern Sector started on Tuesday at St. John Bosco's College, Navrongo.

The competition, which involves seven colleges from the Northern, Upper East and Upper West Regions, is to identify competent sportsmen and women for selection and preparation towards the national sports festival.

Events to be competed in are, football, volleyball, table tennis and athletics.

Alhaji Amidu Sulemana, Upper East Regional Minister, who opened the competition, advised the participants to be of good behaviour and to be respectful to their instructors to make the competition a success.

"You must perform your respective events, to the best of your ability and remember that sports, in the contemporary world, is business that deserves hard work like many other endeavours", he added.

The participating schools include St John Bosco' Training College, Pusiga Training College, Tumu Training College and Ahmmadiya Training College.

The rest are Bagabaga Training College, Tamale Teachers Training College and Bimbilla Training College.

Soccer-Tano District win Under-12 competition

Techiman (Brong Ahafo), 23 March 

Tano District beat Sunyani District, 4-3 on penalties in the finals of this year's Brong-Ahafo Regional Basic Schools Inter-District Under-12 soccer competition played at Techiman on Monday.

The match ended scoreless at the end of the 90-minute regulation perIod and in the penalty shootouts, Tano banged in four goals as against three by Sunyani.

The five-day competition, which featured all the 13 districts, was aimed at selecting a team to represent the region at the national under-12 soccer competition to be held in Kumasi from April 17-25.

A spokesman for the Regional Physical Education Directorate of the Ghana Education Service said 28 players selected during the competition would begin camping at Sunyani from Monday, March 29.

Soccer-Republicans beat Africans 3-1

Nsawam (Eastern Region), 23 March 

Great Republicans of Darmang Ahuntem beat Great Africans of Adeiso 3-1 in a friendly soccer match played at Darmang Ahuntem on Sunday.

Striker Kwadjo Kpo scored the opener for Republicans in the 17th minute when he beautifully finished off a well-taken corner kick.

The only goal for Great Africans was scored by inside left Yaw Adu in the 43rd minute.

Left winger Yaw Fitor of Republicans netted twice in the 68th and 89th minutes to bring the scores to 3-1.

At Otaose, near Nsawam, local teachers beat their Marfukrom counterparts 1-0 in a special friendly soccer match played Otoase on Sunday.

Teacher Kwabena Obuba scored the only goal in the 88th minute.
