Accra (Greater Accra) 29 June 2001

Alhaji Nurudeen Jawula, the recent past chairman of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Management Board has sent congratulatory messages to Mr Ben Koufie, his successor and Abedi Ayew Pele, a new member of the board on their election success last Wednesday.

In congratulatory letters copied to Mr Joe Aggrey, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports and Mr Worlanyo Agra, General Secretary of the GFA, the former chairman expressed the hope that the elevation of the two would accelerate the development of the game and "place Ghana football squarely on the continental and world maps."

While congratulating Pele on his appointment as Soccer Ambassador Extraordinaire, Alhaji Jawula said he was optimistic that Pele would bring his vast international experience to bear on the development of the game.

"I have no doubt that the nation stands to gain from the vast international experience of Mr Ayew, he wrote.

The ex chairman concluded by wishing the entire team the best of luck during their tenure of office.

Mr Ben Koufie was on Wednesday elected unopposed as his opponent, Mr Abedi Pele stepped down at the eleventh hour.

Mr Abedi Pele however automatically became a member of the GFA management board. Minutes later he was elevated by President John Agyekum Kufuor to the office of Soccer Ambassador Extraordinaire.
