National museums should be developed - Gyimah

Accra (Greater Accra) 29 June 2001

Mr Nkrumah Gyimah, Deputy Chairman of National Commission on Culture (NCC), on Thursday called for the development of Ghana's museums to make them more attractive so as to increase the number of people who visit them.

The museums would also generate funds if the visitations increase, Mr Gyimah said when he received the keys to a gift shop for the national museums in Accra, which was established and funded by the Swiss Embassy.

The shop forms part of an 18.35 million-cedi assistance, which the embassy has offered the museums.

Mr Gyimah said the museums have benefited from Swiss assistance in the form of exhibitions and workshops and expressed the hope that it will continue.

Mr Werner Wiedmer, Swiss Ambassador in Ghana, said the shop was the outcome of a proposal made in 1995 to help the museum to generate income.
