Kotoko pip Okwawu at Nkawkaw

Nkawkaw (Eastern Region) 26 - 06 -2001

Visiting Kumasi Asanti Kotoko silenced the vociferous Okwawu United supporters when they beat them by a lone goal in their Star Premier League match played at the Nkawkaw Park.

It was a balance game from the initial stages on a soggy pitch due to an earlier downpour, which made ball control difficult and also marred the beauty of the game.

Kotoko took control of the game and dominated play. It came as no surprise when Shila Alhassan finished off a free kick in the 18th minute by Stephen Oduro.

Kotoko piled up more pressured on the homesters but the Okwawu defence pivoted around skipper Seth Osei, remained resolute and foiled all their efforts.

Okwawu lifted their game in the second half when they brought on Iddrisu Ridwan for Kofi Appetor in the 52nd minute and came close to scoring in the 54th minute when Seth Osei long-range shot missed the posts narrowly.

In the 73rd minute, Kotoko sent in Michael Osei and Felix Yeboah for Godfred Yeboah and Nana Frimpong to strengthen their midfield, which had broken

down but even though Okwawu continued to dominate play, their could not

produce the needed equaliser.

Dawu beat Olympics

Accra (Greater Accra) 26 June 2001

Accra, Great Olympics failed to put the smiles back on the faces of their ardent fans who defied the rain to watch their sixth week Star Premier League match played at the Accra Sports Stadium when they slumped to a 2-3 defeat to Dawu Youngsters.

In the sixth minute, an Olympics pressure paid off when a spot kick awarded them was expertly converted by inside left J. B. Danquah after Dawu's Mohammed Polo handled the ball in the penalty area.

Dawu Youngsters showed guts and fought back gallantly and gave a quick reply in the 10th minutes through Awudu Adama who connected a Baba Sulley cross.

With both teams at par, the tension in the match increased and the few fans, who defied the rains to watch the match were appeased as both teams sold an afternoon of classic football.

Luck however came on the side of the Wonder boys when they had another penalty

kick after striker Ian Acquah of Dawu had touched the ball in the goal area. J B

Danquah converted once again to put Olympics back into the driving seat.

Dawu called off the Olympics bluff in the 34th minute after Ian Acquah's corner kick, was lobbed into the net by Baba Sulley.

With defeat steering at them, Olympics struggled to increase the tally but they wasted clear chances in the 40th and 44th minutes.

Back from recess, both teams struggled to score more goals. Olympics were the more aggressor, but luck eluded them in the 49th minute when a defensive mix up caused them another goal through Awudu Adama who now leads the goal king chart with six goals.

GHALCA meets Tuesday on GFA chairmanship election

Accra (Greater Accra) 26 June 2001

The Ghana League Clubs Association, (GHALCA) will meet on Tuesday, June 26 to deliberate on the election of a new  Ghana Football Association (GFA) scheduled for Wednesday June 27.

Mr J.Y. Appiah, chairman of GHALCA told the GNA Sports on Sunday that the meeting would decide on the choice of candidate of club owners, which GHALCA represents.

He said the meeting would weigh the odds against the two candidates, who are seeking election to head the GFA and present a common front at the election the next day.

The government has nominated Mr. Ben Koufie, a former national player and now a Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) and Confederation of African Football (CAF) instructor and Abedi Pele, former Black Stars skipper to vie for the chairmanship.

The GHALCA chairman said they would be doing Ghana football a disservice if they as stakeholders do not ensure that the better candidate of the two nominees gets the nod.

He said from feelers available to GHALCA indications are that one of the candidates would be disqualified thereby making the election a single candidate affair.

Mr Appiah did not however give the name of the candidate who stands the misfortune of disqualification; neither did he give the reasons for his possible disqualification.

He said whatever consensus GHALCA might come out with would be in the interest of the game and not a support or an opposition to any of the candidates because of personality clashes.

The GFA executive council, which elects the board chairman of the association, consists of 33 members and GHALCA has 16 places on the electorate.
