GFA to alter rules if league is not completed on scheduled
GFA to alter rules if league is not completed on scheduled
Accra
(Greater Accra) 21 June 2001
Mr Y. A.
Ibrahim, Chairman of the Executive Council of the Ghana football Association
(GFA) has stated that the council would not hesitate to alter the rules of the
League if it becomes apparent that a winner could not be declared by December
this year, for onward submission to CAF.
He told the
GNA Sports in an interview that at the moment the league schedules are very
tight and said the situation is even worse because the F.A Cup has not started.
"Looking
at the way things are now, I doubt whether we can meet the deadline set by CAF
especially after the league went on a month's break following the Accra Sport
Stadium May 9 disaster", he said.
"At
the moment we have five-and-half months to come out with winners in both the F.
A. Cup and the league and taking into consideration, a possible three more
breaks to enable the Black Stars prepare for the World Cup qualifiers against
Liberia, Sudan and Nigeria, it will be extremely difficult to meet the dead
line", he added.
On what
decision the executive council is likely to take on the issue, Mr. Ibrahim said
the council has several options within its statues to employ.
He said
even though the unexpected May 9th disaster could be the main cause, the
frequent unplanned breaks in the league could also be a factor for the delay.
Accra
Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asanti Kotoko are seeking the postponement of the
seventh week league matches to enable them go to South
Africa to
participate in the Vodacom Challenge Cup which also involves Orlando Pirates
and Kaiser Chiefs, of South Africa.
The
tournament is partly to raise funds for the families of the victims of the
Accra Sports Stadium and the April 11 Ellis Park disasters, in South Africa.
He said any
attempt to further postponed the league could throw it out of gear.
Mr Ibrahim
said the Professional League Board is faced with a huge task of rescheduling
two outstanding matches involving Hearts.
