Farmer jailed for stealing goats
Twifu Praso
(Central Region) 11 June 2001
The
Twifu-Hemang-Lower Denkyira community tribunal on Friday sentenced a farmer,
Kwesi Kuma, alias killer, to 36 months imprisonment for stealing two goats,
jumping bail and causing harm.
He pleaded
guilty to all the charges.
The
tribunal presided over by Mr. John Ankoma heard that on May 24, Kuma attempted to sell two goats to some
butchers at Twifu Praso. The butchers became suspicious and arrested Kuma to
the police station.
Prosecution
said the accused, who was given bail to appear in court on May 26 failed to
turn up. He was arrested on a bench warrant and placed in police custody.
On June 2,
Kuma escaped from police cells but was arrested a few metres from the police
station. His arrest was, however, not without a fight. He bit and gave a blow
to a police helper, Mr. Kwame Mbroh who assisted in arresting him.
The
tribunal ordered the goats to be given back to their owners and 100,000 cedis
paid as compensation to Mr. Mbroh.

rear vehicle indicator and the projector.
Upon a
tip-off, Boakye was also later arrested that day at Twifo-Hemang.

Kumasi
(Ashanti Region) 11 June 2001
A
traditional ruler has appealed to Acting Chief Justice E. K. Wiredu to
reconsider the decision to transfer Justice Gilbert M. Quaye, a Kumasi High
Court Judge to Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region.
Nana Opoku
Nsiah, Sanaahene of Jema in the Brong-Ahafo Region, made the appeal through the
Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi.
The chief
contended that since Justice Quaye was the first judge to sit on the December
2000 Election dispute over the Bawku Central Parliamentary seat "it is
reasonable to assume that a section of the people for purely political reasons
might be hostile to him.
"It
is, therefore, my humble appeal that Justice Quaye is considered for transfer
to another place", Nana Nsiah, who said he was speaking for himself,
added.
Hajia Fati
Seidu, ex-Deputy Regional Minister and the National Democratic Congress (NDC)
Parliamentary Candidate is challenging the results of the Bawku Central
Parliamentary election won by Madam Hawa Yakubu, Minister of Tourism.
