Politicians asked to spearhead environmental campaign

Accra (Greater Accra) 06 June 2001

Dr Baffoe Bonnie, NPP-Asokwa East, on Tuesday called for political leadership in solving environmental problems.

The member, who made a statement in Parliament to commemorate World Environmental Day, said, "all the two hundred members of this house should consider ourselves as ambassadors of the environment".

The World Environment Day was instituted by the United Nation's General Assembly in 1972.

The theme for this year's celebration is "our environment, let's manage it together".

Mr John Dramani Mahama, NDC-Bole, lauded Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, Okyenhene, for instituting strong anti-deforestation measures, which has helped in protecting the forest in his area.

He appealed to other traditional authorities to emulate the Okyenhene.

The member asked the Minister of Fisheries to check the use of DDT and other unsafe methods of fishing in the Black Volta.

Mr Mahama said the people in and around Bole are experiencing a fast depletion of their forest through charcoal production.

Other members called for an all year round campaign to arrest environmental abuse.
