Chairman of board of patrons of Oly, resigns

Accra (Ghana) 27 June 2000

Nana Kwamina Kwatse the second, Chairman of the Board of Patrons of Accra Great Olympics Football Club has resigned on health grounds with immediate effect.

Nana Kwatse alias Alex A. Biney, who turns 70 next month, said in his resignation letter copied to GNA Sports that he has been ill for the past few months and his present condition can no longer enable him act in any active capacity of the club.

The Chief Patron served Great Olympics for 40 years during which he held positions as Chairman for 12 years and later as Director. "I still remain loyal to the 'Wonder Club' and may offer any assistance if my health improves", he said.

Later in an interview with newsmen at his Awudome Estates residence, Nana Kwatse said he has been Chairman of the Board since 1985 and would like to retire and hand-over to very active members to manage the affairs of the club.

On his achievements during his four decades of dedicated service with the club, he said "we pulled surprises and achieved the great name "Wonder Club."

On the current conflict between some executives of Accra Great Olympics, Nana Kwatse said this has nothing to do with his resignation, adding, "my recent press statement should not be seen as a support for any of the factions but rather to bring unity within the club."

Olympics is currently divided into two factions with one side supporting Mr. Ade Coker, the current Chairman who is being asked to resign by the other group led by Mr Ben Brown, an Accra Businessman.
