Bank clerk before court for stealing

Mpraeso (Eastern Region) 23 June 2000

A 39-year-old senior clerk at the Mponua Rural Bank's Agency at Nkawkaw on Thursday appeared before the Mpraeso Circuit Court on 15 counts of forging the signatures of 13 customers and stealing 32.5 million cedis from their accounts.

The clerk, Ebenezer Nyarko Boateng, who pleaded not guilty to all the counts, was granted a 50 million-cedi bail with two sureties to be justified and to reappear on July 10.

Prosecution’s case was that customers of the bank were complaining about inaccuracies in their balances, as a result of which the manager instituted an inquiry.

It was revealed that from 1998 up to the end of May this year, Boateng forged the signatures of 13 customers and succeeded in withdrawing 32.5 million cedis from their accounts.

A report was made to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters and the Economic Crime Bureau (ECB) in Accra and Boateng was arrested, the court presided over by Mr Justice Charles Asiedu was told.
