Farmer jailed for attempted murder

Nkoranza (Brong Ahafo) 22 June 2000

The Nkoranza District Community Tribunal, presided over by Nana Gyamfi Awuah, on Monday sentenced Kwadwo Agyemang, a 30-year-old farmer from Ayerado, near Nkoranza, to six months' imprisonment with hard labour for attempting to kill another farmer.

Agyemang was alleged to have attacked Mr. Nasidu Alhassan, aged 20, with a pair of scissors and inflicted wounds in his stomach and right arm.

The tribunal had heard that the accused once had an affair with a woman (name withheld) with whom he had two children but later divorced her.

The divorcee started another affair with Alhassan but Agyemang threatened to kill Alhassan on the pretext that the latter had snatched his wife from him.

For fear of losing his life, Alhassan left the woman over a year ago, however, on Monday, June 12, this year, while Alhassan was returning from a friend's house at Ayerado around 10 p.m., the accused attacked him with the scissors and bolted from the area.

Alhassan was rushed to the local clinic for treatment but was later referred to the Nkoranza Saint Theresa's Hospital where he was admitted for four days. The accused was spotted at his hiding place on June 16 and was arrested by the police.
