Michael Osei charged with rape

Determined to prove their worth, a
locally select Black Stars exhibited stubbornness against the Pharaohs of Egypt on Saturday before succumbing 0-2
to the North Africans when the two crossed paths at the Cairo National Stadium
on Saturday.
That the entire side picked from
the domestic league, were mobbed by the Egyptian fans and pressmen alike after
the match was enough signal that the Ghanaians were no way minnows for the 94
minutes that the match lasted.
The Egyptian side have been in
camp for several weeks and have just emerged as the runners-up from a
four-nation tour including Yugoslavia, South Korea and hosts, Iran in contrast
to a less than a week call-up for the Ghanaians.
Egypt, hoping to hit cricket score
to erase from memory a 2-1 painful defeat Ghana inflicted on them last
November, kicked off brilliantly and nearly got the opener from their very
first move when a glancing header from Hazam Eman almost found the net.
But before the spectators could
shout for a goal, goalkeeper Sammy Adjei dived his full limit to parry the ball
across the bar.
The Egyptians kept their heat on
and six minutes into the game, a perfect made-to-measure cross from playmaker,
Abdel Satar Sabri of Portuguese’s Benfica, saw Walid Salah Abdellatif fetching
the first goal of the afternoon.
Neither the goal nor the deafening
roar from the partisan vociferous crowd could cow the young Ghanaians into
submission as they reacted quickly and came close to clinching the equalisier
from a beautiful combination between Baffour Gyan and Ishmael Addo in the 14th
minute.
A timely intervention by full back
Tarkel Said saved the situation for Egypt and the match remained balanced until
the break.
Looking desperate to stem the
tide, Stars’ coach Giuseppe Dossena made four substitutions after the change
and the Egyptians replied by bringing on six fresh limbs.
The inclusion of Bernard Dong
Bortey, Yaw Owusu, Nana Frimpong and Ibrahim Attiku brought some life into the
Ghanaians game as they seized the midfield and strung their passes together but
the Egyptian defenders tidied up all their dangerous moves.
In the 61st minute,
Gyan was booked for fouling an opponent, while Sammy Adjei continued his rescue
mission with a spectacular diving save of substitute Mohammed Farrouk’s curling
shot after 66 minutes.
The game looked like settling on
the thin scoreline but four minutes into injury time, Stars defence crumbled
and Ahmed Salah Hosni of Stuttgart, who had replaced Sabri earlier on, headed
coolly into a yawning net from a deep cross by Ahmed Hassan.

Ghatel ladies beat Mawuena F/C 1-0 in the first week of the Greater Accra Women's soccer league played at the Indadfa Park on Sunday.
Skipper Alberta Sackey scored the only goal of the match in the 51st minute when she shot the ball straight into the net after receiving a straight cross from Grace Bayor in the goal area.
Both teams played well in the first half, but Ghatel proved a more superior side, gaining advantage over the Mawuena ladies, with experience players like Alberta Sackey, Sheila Okine and Grace Bayor, who featured in the Women's World Soccer '99 in the United States.
Ghatel had many scoring chances, but Mawuena ladies put up a good defence, making it impossible for them to weave their way through.
In the 36th minute, Alberta had a beautiful opportunity to score when Grace Bayor gave a pass, but unfortunately, the ball went straight into the waiting arms of goalkeeper, Patience Sam.
Ghatel Ladies pilled up the pressure on Mawuena, but Patricia Ofori and Angela Awuku's solid defence work thwarted their effort till the end of the first half.
In the second half, Ghatel took full control of the match, trying all they could to score more goals but to no avail.
Mawuena also tried all they could to equalise but failed in their attempt in the 40th minute.
Results of the remaining matches were not immediately available.

Micheal Osei, a regular player of
Kumasi Asante Kotoko Football Club, appeared before a Kumasi Circuit Tribunal
on Friday for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl at Ashanti New Town.
Osei pleaded not guilty and was
granted six million cedis bail with a surety to be justified. He will re-appear
on Thursday, July 6.
Police Chief Inspector Regina
Kesewaa, prosecuting, told the tribunal chaired by Mr. Justice Ernest Yao
Obimpeh, that in March this year, the mother of the victim detected that her
daughter was pregnant and when she questioned her, Osei's name was mentioned as
being responsible.
She said the mother of the victim
informed the personnel manager of Osei about the pregnancy. Consequently, Osei
gave 300,000 cedis through his personnel manager to be given to the mother of
the girl to abort the pregnancy.
The prosecutor said the mother
collected the money but refused to abort the pregnancy and rather reported the
matter to the police who through investigations, concluded that Osei had raped
the victim on December 21 last year. Osei was, therefore, charged with the
offence.
