Teachers alleged to have impregnated schoolgirls

Akim-Oda (Eastern Region) 14 June 2000

The Akim-Oda Family Tribunal has begun hearing cases in which two junior secondary school (JSS) teachers allegedly impregnated two of their students but are denying responsibility.

The teachers are Mr Samuel Djan of the Oforikrom Local Authority JSS and Mr Takyi Bimpong of the Akim Achiase Salvation Army JSS.

The girls aged 15 and 14 are students of Oforikrom Local Authority JSS and Akim Achiase JSS respectively. The 15 year old has already given birth.

A source close to the Birim South District Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Akim Oda that when the parents of the girls detected the pregnancy and questioned them, they mentioned the teachers as being responsible.

The source further said that the parents sent the case to the family tribunal after the teachers had denied responsibility.

The tribunal chaired by Mr S. D. Alhasan of the Akim Oda Community Tribunal has directed that a paternity test be conducted on the babies when the other girl delivers.

Meanwhile the District Directorate of the Ghana Education Service said it was waiting for the outcome of investigations before any decision could be taken.

A medical doctor before Tribunal for fraud

Accra (Greater Accra) 14 June 2000

Anthony K. Osei, a medical doctor, who allegedly collected 24 million cedis, 1,200 pounds sterling and 13,000 dollars from a retired banker under the pretext of supplying him with heavy duty caterpillar and truck tyres on Tuesday appeared before a circuit tribunal in Accra.

Osei pleaded not guilty to defrauding by false pretences and issuing of false cheque and was granted 100,000 cedis bail with two sureties to be justified. He will appear again on June 26.

The Prosecution told the tribunal chaired by Mrs Elizabeth Anderson Yebuah that in April 1996, Osei collected the money from the complainant, Mr J. A. Dadzie, a retired banker and a close friend of the accused and promised to supply him with heavy-duty tyres for caterpillar and trucks, but failed to do so.

When the complainant requested for a refund of the money, Osei issued a dud cheque for 24 million cedis to be drawn on Ghana Commercial Bank, Adjabeng Branch, but it was dishonoured.

Upon persistent demand by Mr Dadzie, on March 15 last year, the accused again issued a cheque for 1,800 pounds to be drawn at London Stockwell Branch of Nat West Bank, but it was dishonoured. Osei then went into hiding until Mr Dadzie made a report to the police and he arrested.
