China Offers Ghana 130,000 dollars

Accra (Greater Accra) 10 June 2000

China has offered Ghana one million Yuan (about 130,000 dollars) to enable the government to place orders for general goods from China.

Mr. Victor Gbeho, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Mr. Lu Yongshou, Chinese Ambassador in Ghana signed an agreement to this effect in Accra on Friday. The specific items to be purchased are yet to be identified by the government.

Mr. Lu said China would encourage more Chinese companies to develop mutually beneficial cooperation with Ghana.

Sino-Ghanaian trade relations in the last few years show a gap of more than a 100 million dollars in favour of China.

Chinese exports to Ghana stood at 120 million dollars in 1998, but dropped to 114.33 million dollars last year while Ghanaian exports to China, mainly cocoa and gold, fixed at eight million dollars in 1998, dropping to five million dollars in 1999.

Mr. Lu promised more cooperation and increased trading activities, especially exports from Ghana.
