Book on girl-child education launched

Sunyani (Brong Ahafo) 10 June 2000

Mr. Donald Adabre, Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, on Thursday launched a book on girl-child education - Educating Mansah - published by Readwide Bookshop Limited, an Accra-based book retailing and publishing firm, at Sunyani.

The 22-page book deals with prejudices against females, especially the girl-child, and the conflict between tradition and modernism.

Mr. Adabre said it was time society abolished customary beliefs, practices, norms and values that are used against females in the rural communities.

"Such conservative attitudes psychologically dampen the ego of girl-children and make them very dispirited."

The minister said current global trends dictate that girl-children must not be restricted to childbearing or keeping the home.

"They should be given the opportunity by parents and guardians to show initiative and resourcefulness to prove their worth in the society through education."

Mr. Ben Abianko Agalga, Brong Ahafo Regional Director of Education, expressed regret that girl-child education is taken for granted in the region.

He said the gender gap between the boy-child and the girl-child is at the ratio of three to one in the schools and follows in that order on the educational ladder in the region.
