Boy, 9, on sale for 14 million cedis

The Ghanaian Times reports on the arrest of Kwesi Adjei, a 26-year-old truck pusher at Sefwi Asawinso, for offering his nine-year-old nephew for sale at 14 million cedis.

Following a tip off by an informant, he was arrested, while in the process of trading his nephew for cash last Saturday.

According to the Sefwi Wiawso District Police Commander, Superintendent W.L. Gbogbo, the suspect came to Sefwi Wiawso last Friday with the purpose of seeking 'market' for his nephew, a pupil of Sefwi Asanwinso 'B' School.

A resident, who overheard Adjei discussing the transaction with another person, in 1999 feigned interest and a deal was entered into between Adjei and the informant. They agreed on 14 million cedis as the purchase price.

The informant, thereafter, informed the Assemblyman, Mr Kweku Tanoh, whom together with the informant reported the deal to the police leading to the arrest of Adjei.

Adjei is now on a police remand awaiting prosecution.

According to the report, the Asantehene, clad in rich Kente clothes alighted from the presidential jet, in which he and his entourage travelled from Accra to Kumasi, to the welcome of a joyous crowd who chanted 'King Solomon', 'King Solomon' amidst the waving of Asanteman flags and white handkerchiefs.

Thuggery at dawn…20 residents of Asylum Down brutalised

The lead story of the Daily Graphic has it that a group of armed persons, numbering about 25, attacked some residents in Accra at dawn yesterday, injuring over 20 of them in the process.

Fifteen of the victims attack, believed to be a vendetta against the residents by some soldiers over an incident that happened last week, were rushed to the Police Hospital whilst an undisclosed number were sent to the 37 Military Hospital.

The report quotes an eye witness, Cynthia Akrobotu, as saying that at about 2.30 a.m., there were repeated knocks at her door and when her husband opened the door, a group of people in military uniform pounced on him, beat him mercilessly and wounded him on the head and left shoulder with a cutlass.

Cynthia said the uniformed men then proceeded to the other rooms in the house, broke into them and brought out all the males whom they subjected to the same treatment, adding that some were beaten with the butt of guns.

According to her, they dragged out Seth Atutor, a 62-years old carpenter whose ear was almost chopped off, and she heard the men asking him to produce his apprentice, who is said to have, a week earlier, had a confrontation with four military men who were drunk and driving carelessly.

Cynthia said Atutor could not produce any such person and he was beaten until he collapsed. She said in the process of beating the people, she heard one of the men saying, "you attacked one of our colleagues and today you will see".

According to the report, when the Public Relations Directorate of the Ghana Armed Forces was contacted for their reaction, Major Comfort Ankumah said the incident is being investigated and at the appropriate time, the Armed Forces would come out.

Nine to probe plane crash

The Daily Graphic in another front-page story, reports that a board of inquiry to investigate the cause of the plane crash, which occurred at the Kotoka International Airport on June 5, was yesterday inaugurated at the Ministry of Roads and Transport in Accra.

The airforce plane, Airlink, which was carrying 52 passengers from Tamale, crash-landed at the airport, killing six people and wounding many others.

The nine-member board, which is under the chairmanship of Captain Alex Sam, an ex-pilot and former Managing Director of Ghana Airways, is also required to make appropriate recommendations, which would lead to the prevention of similar occurrence in the future.

The board, the report says, is expected to submit its report through the Director-General of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCCA) to the Minister of Roads and Transport. The deadline for the submission of the report was however not disclosed.

Meanwhile, the report says, the United States Government has sent a message of condolence to the government and people of Ghana for the loss of lives in the June 5 aviation accident at the Kotoka International Airport.

The Evening News

Mills warns confusionists

The Evening News reports in its led story that Vice President Prof. Atta Mills has warned supporters of the National democratic Congress (NDC) who are causing problems within the party in the Ashaiman constituency to discontinue their diabolic activities and allow peace to prevail.

He said, in an address to party faithfuls at Ashaiman near Team, that the NDC and its alliances would not allow few individuals to sow seeds of discord among its members.

The warning comes in the wake of mounting tension at the Ashaiman Constituency following speculations that there would be no primaries to elect the NDC parliamentary candidate to contest the general elections.

According to the report, about seven people have expressed interest in contesting the constituency on the ticket of the NDC. The aspirants, the report says, claimed that the incumbent had outlived his usefulness, politically, to the people of Ashaiman.

Prof. Mill is said to have, in the address, urged members of the Progressive Alliance to close their ranks and ensure that the constituency remains the stronghold of the party.

The fierce fight for votes… We shall match word for word - NPP

The Guide reports in its banner headline that Mr. Dan Botwe, the New Patriotic Party (NPP's) General Secretary has warned that any vicious comment made against his party will be returned equally. He said politics is not a friendly match, since all parties are in a fierce competition, and are looking for votes.

Dan Botwe who was speaking on Joy FM radio last Wednesday about the verbal confrontations going on among some of the parties, particularly the NDC and the NPP, however admitted that such confrontation is not healthy for the country's young democracy.

He deplored what he described as 'the attitude' of the NDC government slanting it as "a regime with military dictatorship background, which has turned itself into civilian administration".

He again noted that the NDC's behaviour is portrayed "as if Ghana belongs solely to the party and they can do anything they like".

Asked why the NPP has not focused on the gathering of votes and telling people about the party's policies rather than engaging in confrontation of words with the NDC, Dan Botwe said: "We do talk and we are talking about policies, but when in the cause of talking policies, an allegation is made against you, you do not just keep on talking about policies without answering that allegation.

CPP aspirant warns Jerry! "He must be told he is not the only 'macho man' in town"

The Crusading Guide says in its banner headline that Dr Abubakar Alhassan, aspiring National Chairman of the Convention People's Party (CPP) has warned that his party will respond adequately to the infantile threats of President Rawlings to disrupt the democratic process.

Dr Alhassan was reacting to Mr Rawlings' June 4 speech at a meeting with party officials and members at the Brong Ahafo Regional capital, Suynani.

He said Rawlings' threat to "dynamise" the Constitution and infuse 'a revolutionary spirit” into it, is an abuse of his mandate and insult to the electorate which reflects his extreme arrogance and infantile adventurist posturing.

Dr Alhassan said 20 years of Rawlings rule has brought nothing but pain and severe hardship to the people of Ghana.

He described himself as a socialist and declared amidst thunderous applause "Nkrumaism, which is socialism, is our only way forward in the face of crippling poverty".

"Let's have your dollars", "Yentuah!"…Ghanaians in the US say we no go gree!

The Accra Mail in its lead story, quotes a contact in the US as reporting that Ghanaians in the US have sent a resounding no to an SOS request for them to contribute US$100 each to bail out the Ghanaian economy.

The paper says the tide of the Ghanaian Community in the US towards this government has deteriorated dramatically over the years.

According to the paper, in a survey conducted on the website, www.ghanaweb.com, about 80 percent of respondents say the country has deteriorated while only 3 percent see an improvement.

This, the paper quotes one of its contacts in the US as saying, is blamed on the government, which has excluded large sections of the body politic from participating in the management of the economy.

The misdeeds, real or imagined of the government, were catalogued as reasons for the resounding "yentua" - we will not pay! The report says.

Fall-out from Gbadegbe probe… Ade Coker rejects white paper

*Seek redress at Appeal Court

 *Nana Butler meets press today

The Independent reports that Mr. Ade Coker, the President of Accra Great Olympics Club, has no intention to desert the wonder club and his country and has sworn to defend his honour and reputation in the courts of the land.

His lawyers, the paper says, are putting final touches to an appeal by him and Accra Great Olympics to challenge the recommendations against him by the Government White Paper issued on the report of the Gbadebge Committee on the transfer of Ghanaian players.

The paper quotes 'its sources' as saying that the courts of the land should expect more appeals from some parties mentioned in the White Paper who believe that the findings and recommendations are skewed against them.

According to the paper, Mr Coker said in an interview that there are lots of injustices inherent in the White Paper.

The paper quotes one of its sources as hinting that Nana Brew Butler, former GFA boss' lawyers are working on a similar move and he is expected to hold a press conference this morning at the Ghana International Press Centre.

How I survived plane crash… Miss Ghana's nightmare

The Graphic Showbiz features on its front page the picture of a relaxing Marian Sugru Bugri, Miss Ghana '99. The paper also carries a narration of how the Ghanaian beauty queen survived a plane crash that killed six of its 52 passengers and injured many others at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra last Monday.

"It was just an act of His mercy. I don't know how I did it. All I saw was that I was crouched over almost double at the very edge of one half of the cabin. The aircraft had split into two and my seat was just where the split occurred.

"My left ankle was twisted beneath me and so was my right arm. I felt my seat belt tighten at my waist so with my left hand, I tried to unbuckle it. Surprisingly, it came off easily and on all fours, I managed to crawl through the gaping hole", Miss Bugri told her nightmarish experience a day after the incident.

On whether she would be brave to fly again soon, she smiled and said "A big aircraft, yes; but it will take me some time to go with a small one…and lest I forget, I would like to thank Airlink for their ticket donation that enabled me to do the tour", she said.
