Ghana's qualification to 2002 World Cup - Amankwah, Hagan invited

Accra (Greater Accra) 07 –06 – 2000

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has extended invitation to two former Black Star players, Frank Amankwah and Ebenezzer Hagan to beef up the team for their impending international friendly against the Pharaohs of Egypt.

The decision to call the two, the GFA says, is in line with its intention to cast its net far and wide in order to assess the best available players as the nation prepares for the 2002 World Cup qualifying series from July.

The players, who are currently on holiday in Ghana, are expected to join their colleagues in camp immediately, for the forthcoming trial.

FA boss, Alhaji Mohammed Nuru Deen Jawula, said the arrangement will offer coach Dossena the opportunity to personally assess the players before naming his squad for the World Cup qualifiers.

Amankwah, currently based in Greece, was a member of the Black Stars in the early 90's and onetime deputy skipper of the side.

He lost his membership of the group some two years ago largely because no proper

mechanism was put in place to monitor his progress after securing  foreign contract which took him initially to Germany.

**In the case of Hagan, he was invited to don the national jersey in 1996 and featured for both the Black Stars and the national under-23 side, the Black Meteors.

He too lost touch with the selectors to the national team when he sojourned to Turkey for a professional career.

In another development, German-based Ghanaian player, Frank Weiner, has offered to put his services at the disposal of the Black Stars.

Weiner, of German first division Borussia Mundenggladback side, told the nation's soccer controlling body over the weekend.

He is said to hold a German passport and featured for Germany's national Under 20 side but under FIFA regulations, he is still qualified to play for the Black Stars since that match was not competitive.

Meanwhile, homecoming Ghanaian born Bundesliga star, Gerald Asamoah, is expected to hold crucial talks with the FA that could see him rescind his intention to play for the Germany.

'Prodigal' Asamoah is expected home with his father and both will be holding discussions that would see him donning the golden jersey.

As part of the team's build-up for the World Cup qualifying series, two international friendly matches have been lined-up for June. Their first assignment takes them to Cairo where they will be guests of the Egypt national team, the Pharaohs, on June 16 and 17.

On June 30, Stars will host Kenya at the Accra Sports Stadium.
