Landlord charged with assault and causing harm

Accra (Greater Accra), 30th June 99 -

Sulley Bukari, a landlord, who mercilessly assaulted his tenant, Ms Ajara Abdallah, following a misunderstanding between them has been remanded in custody by an Accra Public Tribunal.

Bukari, 47, who is a driver, pleaded not guilty to assault and causing harm. He would appear again on July seven.

Police Inspector Alex Yartey Tawiah, prosecuting, told the tribunal that Miss Ajara is a trader and a tenant staying in Bukari's house at Nyamekye in Accra.

There have been persistent rifts between them for the past five months and the matter was before the Rent Control Office.

He said on June three, Ajara bought some goats from Tamale and sold them, but left one, which she tied on the compound.

The prosecutor said later in the evening when Bukari returned from town, he cut the rope to release the goat and when Ajara questioned his action, he became offended and beat her until she became unconscious.

Inspector Tawiah said the victim was then rushed to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, where she regained consciousness and a report was made to the Women and Juvenile Unit of the Police Service, who arrested Bukari.

Electrician charged with causing harm

Accra (Greater Accra), 30th June 99 -

Emmanuel Boateng, an auto electrician, who poured a liquid substance, suspected to be acid on his two colleagues during a scuffle, on Tuesday appeared before a circuit tribunal in Accra, charged with causing harm.

Boateng, 21, pleaded not guilty and was granted five million cedis bail to reappear on July 15.

Prosecuting, Police Inspector Joseph Ohemeng, told the tribunal chaired by Mr Charles Nyewolema, that the complainants, Mr Emmanuel Agbevon, a welder who works in the same place as Boateng and Mr Ebenezer Addo, driver's mate, live at Madina in Accra.

Inspector Ohemeng said on March 28, this year at about 21:00 hours, Mr Agbevon was sleeping on a bench at the workshop, when one Vivian Dede Kwae, girl-friend of Boateng, approached him to rescue her from Boateng, who wanted to beat her with a belt.

He said Mr Agbevon then woke up and sought the assistance of Mr Addo, who together managed to stop Boateng from beating Vivian.

The prosecutor said Boateng who did not take kindly to the separation, left the scene but later returned with a bottle of liquid suspected to be acid and poured it on Mr Agbevon and Mr Addo.

"This resulted in a fight between Mr Agbevon and Boateng, but they were separated".

He said Mr Agbevon and Mr Addo attended separate clinics for treatment of the burns, while patiently waiting for the head of the workshop to amicably settle the squabble.

The two reported the matter to the police when all attempts at amicable settlement had failed.
