Cashier charged with stealing 23.9 million cedis

Accra (Greater Accra) 8th June ’99

Following an internal audit carried out on Saint John's Grammar School’s account in Accra, Emmanuel Kwaku Asare, a cashier of the school has been arraigned before an Accra Circuit Tribunal charged with stealing 23,930,010.

The amount represents school fees paid to the school from January one, 1994 to October 1998.

The Tribunal chaired by Mr. Charles Nyawelema head that in October last year, the school authorities detected irregularities in the ledger and receipt books and wrote to inform the Ga District Director of Education at Amasaman.

The school's account was then examined by the internal auditor whose report said Asare had embezzled the amount

The prosecutor said on October 26, last year, a report was made to the Achimota police who arrested Asare. During investigations it was found out that between January, 1994 and October 1998, Asare issued receipts to cover fees paid by students and pocketed the money.

The Prosecution said in Asare's cautioned statement, he admitted the offence but said the amount was not 23.9 million cedis.

Asare, 53, however pleaded not guilty and was granted 10 million cedis bail with one surety to be justified. He is to re-appear on June 23.
