Barkeeper granted bail

Kumasi (Ashanti), 2nd June 99 -

A Kumasi Circuit Tribunal has granted a barkeeper, who appeared before it for allegedly causing harm to a "chop bar" attendant, 10 million cedis bail with two sureties to be justified.

Akwasi Asiedu, alias Fisco, pleaded not guilty, and the case was adjourned to Wednesday, June nine.

Chief Inspector Fabian K. Afesi told the tribunal chaired by Mr Joseph A. Abanga that Kwame Kuttin, a "chop bar" attendant in Kumasi, used to run errands for the accused.

He said in the night of May three, this year, the accused sent Kuttin, and when he returned, he accused him (Kuttin) of stealing his 2,000 cedis.

Chief Inspector Afesi said Asiedu beat Kuttin, with an iron bar, consequently fracturing his leg.

Asiedu later sent Kuttin to a nearby pharmacy shop for treatment and thereafter kept him in his room for three days without informing his (Kuttin's) parents, until one of Kuttin's brother's found out and sent him to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), where he was operated upon.

Kuttin came to court walking on crutches with his right leg in a plaster of Paris as a result of the incident.
