Black Satellites return home

Accra (Greater Accra) 12 July 2001

The Black Satellites, National Under-20 Soccer team, silver medallists in the just-ended World U-20 Youth Championship in Argentina, returned home on Wednesday without the usual fanfare that characterises the arrival of national football teams.

There were pockets of fans waving holding the national flag to welcome the team back home.

The Satellites looked happy and cheerful though they lost the final match 3-0 to Argentina.

The Deputy Sports Minister Joe Aggrey, who arrived ahead of the team, was at the airport to welcome them.

He urged them to maintain the discipline, which brought them the honour and said the country was proud of them for getting that far and that their failure to grab the gold should not dampen their spirits.

"This youth competition is a step to greater heights, notably the World Cup. You might have lost the match but you have the skills," he said.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) Chairman, Ben Kwofie urged them to work hard towards joining the senior team saying that he was hopeful that Ghana would qualify for the World Cup with dedication.

The coach of the team, E. K. Afranie thanked Ghanaians for their prayers and support adding that they did their best to bring the cup home but failed at the last hurdle.

Also at the airport to meet the Black Satellites were Brigadier George Brock, Chief Executive of the National Sports Council and officials of the Council.

RTU pip Olympics

Sunyani (Brong Ahafo) Region 12 - 07 - 2001

Real Tamale United (RTU) won 1-0 over Accra Great Olympics in their midweek Star Premier League match played at the Sunyani Coronation Park.

The goal was scored by substitute Kwame Acheampong in the 75th minute.

Acheampong connected lob from the flanks after outpaced his markers and delivered a carpet shot to the left side of goalkeeper Sam Addo.

Earlier, Olympics had wasted a penalty in the 53rd minute through substitute James Amartey.

Apart from Dodzie Kobina who played a yeoman's game, the attacking force of Olympics flopped in their goal efforts, as they kept wasting scores of scoring chances.

RTU, who were ending their neutral ground matches decision by the Ghana Football Association as a punishment for their hostile supporters at home incidentally is on record as having won all their three matches away.

Okwawu beat Bofoakwa at home

Nkawkaw (Eatern Region) 12 July 2001

Okwahu United beat Tano Bofoakwa 2-0 in their Premier League match played at the Nkawkaw Park on Wednesday.

After dominating and wasting numerous scoring chances in the first half, Okwahu introduced Johnson Eklu and Nii Aryee Tetteh for Idrissu Ridwan and Kofi Apettor respectively in the second half and the changes soon yielded dividends.

Eklu scored, two minutes into the half when he wove through the Bofoakwa defence and side stepped goalkeeper Mohammed Alhassan, before burying the ball into the far right corner of the net.

Disaster struck Bofoakwa in the 53rd minute when Accra based Class one referee, Justice Agbeko red-carded central defender, Owusu Sarpong for a violent tackle on Eklu.

Okwawu took advantage of their numerical superiority over the visitors and had possession for long spells but wasted the chances they created, particularly in the 65th  and 73rd minutes when Earnest Boateng and Idrissu Ismaila fluffed begging opportunities.

In the 80th minute, centre forward, Alfred Nii Darko made it two for Okwawa when he finished off an incisive pass from Eklu to spark off celebrations in Nkawkaw.

Liberty continue winning ways

Accra (Greater Accra) 12 July 2001

Liberty Professionals won their third match on the trot at the Accra Sports Stadium when they beat visiting Berekum Arsenals 2-0 in their ninth week Star Premier League match on Wednesday.

A drab match though, Liberty ensured that they did enough to pick the maximum three points at stake.

54th minutes into the second half, Arsenal's goalie, Isaac Zogah, gifted Liberty the first goal when he rushed out of his goal post and completely missed the ball allowing Morgan, who was lurking around, the easiest opportunity of lobbing the ball into an empty net for the first goal.

Liberty replaced Kofi Deblah with Albert Batsa in the 67th minute in what turned out to be an inspirational substitution as the new entrant brought some speed into the attack of the homesters.

Arsenals, not prepared to go back to Berekum empty handed put up a spirited effort to redeem the goal but substitute Seth Antwi wasted two scoring chances in the 72nd and 75th minutes, when his final shooting let him down.

As the game was drawing to a close, Liberty made sure of the three points in the 84th minute through Albert Neequaye's 40 metre indirect kick that gave goalie Zogah no chance.

Dawu suffers defeat at Koforidua

Koforidua (Eastern Region) 12 July 2001

Dawu Youngsters on Wednesday suffered their second defeat in the Star Premier League when Koforidua based Maxbees beat them 3-2.

Dawu who went down 3-0 in the first half, fought hard in the second half to score twice but chances wasted by Kwame Amadu and Awudu Adama in the 88th and

89th minutes respectively denied them of the equaliser.

Maxbees took the lead in the 19th minute through Asamoah Dzifa and increased it to two in the 40th minute through substitute Kofi Acquah.

In the 44th minute, Eric Marfo took the ball from the centre circle and juggled his way through a host of Dawu players before blasting the ball to the blind side of Anthony Amoah for Maxbees third.

When all seemed to be heading towards total humiliation of Dawu, they assumed total control of the game in the second half and pushed Maxbees players to their own half.

In the 74th minute, Adama reduced the goal deficit when he deflected the ball into the net from a goalmouth melee.

In the 81st minute, Dawu had a free kick just behind the right side of the penalty box and substitute Kwame Amadu passed the ball to Nicholas Addo who quickly blasted the ball into the net for Dawu's second.
