Faisal, RTU draw

Kumasi (Ashanti Region) 09 July 2001

King Faisal drew 1-1 with Real Tamale United (RTU) in their Star premier league match played at the Kumasi Sports Stadium.

Faisal scored first against the run of play through a free kick taken by Joe Agyeman in the 12th minute.

RTU who had earlier failed to utilise an indirect free-kick in the second minute and Joseph Adjei missing a chance, piled pressure to redeem the goal but the defence of Faisal stood gallantly.

Joe Adjei nearly hit the target again in the 22nd minute but he was denied by the woodwork with the resultant corner kick going wasted.

On resumption of the second half, the game turned into hard-tackling and with RTU still probing to find the net and their efforts were rewarded in the 84th minute when substitute Sulemana Faisal equalised for them with a thunderbolt shot which beat Nicholas Opoku Ware in goal for Faisal.

Okwawu, Ghapoha share honours

Nkawkaw (Eastern Region) 09 July 2001

Tema based Ghapoha continued their drawing spree when they held Okwawu United to a goalless draw in their Star Premier League Match played at the Nkawkaw Park on Sunday.

Okwawu kicked off and dominated play for the greater part of the first half but failed to make use of the numerous scoring chances that came their way, particularly in the 15th 20th 26th and 28th minutes.

In the 30th minute, Okwawu wasted a penalty kick awarded them by Cape Coast based, Class One referee Essel walker, when Johnson Eklu was heavily downed in the penalty box. The resultant kick, taken by Eward Acquah, was saved by goalkeeper Abubakari Kenkeni.

Okwawu again had a clear chance to score in the 35th minute but Ernest Boateng's close range header, was again saved by Kenkeni.

Ghapoha returned the attack when the second half resumed with a few breakthroughs by the homesters but neither side could hit the back of the net till the final whistle.

Dawu battles Bofoakwa to a draw

Sunyani (Brong Ahafo Region) 09 - 07 - 2001

Visiting Dawu Youngsters played a well-determined game to hold Bofoakwa Tano to a goalless drawn game in their match played at the Sunyani Coronation Park.

Bofoakwa, playing without their top marksman Anthony Mintah, alias "chief", squandered a number of goal scoring chances, among them a penalty awarded in the second half.

Both sides started the games in earnest with Bofoakwa slightly on top but erratic shooting robbed them of goals with Ebenezer Gyan and Tahiru as the worst offenders.

Dawu, who until Sunday's game were second on the league table, played a great game with veteran Ibrahim Labaran, Mohammed Polo, Malik Gargo and Awudu Adama combining beautifully up front but could not translate their performance into goals.

Just before the end of the first half, Dawu missed a golden chance as Awudu Adama's close-range shot went over the bar.

On resumption, Bofoakwa earned a penalty in the 52nd minute when Malik Gargo whacked Pasco Amponsah in the visitors' vital area, but goalkeeper Anthony Amoaful saved Emmanuel Ampeah's kick.

Goldfields whitewash Adansiman

Obuasi (Ashanti Region) 09 July 2001

Obuasi Goldfields deepened the woes f local rival, Adansiman, when they thrashed them by four, goals to one in their match played at the Len Clay Stadium.

Goldfields victory song started in the 23rd minute when they cancelled the early lead of their opponents and scored three more goals in the second half, to, silence the vociferous fans of Adansiman.

The new entrants stunned the miners with a 20th minute goal when Charles Ampiah rifled in a left footer to the consternation of Goldfields.

Nana Arhin Duah cancelled the lead in the 23rd minute when he jabbed in a shot from an Eric Boakye pass.

Goldfields stepped up their game and in the 46th minute, Boakye sliced through the opponents' defence, side-stepped goalkeeper Justice Yaro and tapped in, to make it 2-1.

Adansiman made three changes in the 53rd, 61st and 68th minutes, but they still had to reel under persistent pressure from the miners and it was just a matter of course, when Arhin Duah fetched his second goal of the afternoon in the 82nd minute with a cheap goal.

The obituary of Adansiman was concluded when Aminu Musah scored, on the stroke of full time, bringing the final scores to 4-1 in favour of Goldfields.

Akunnor salutes Black Stars, GFA

Accra (Greater Accra) 09 July 2001

The skipper of the senior national soccer team, C K Akunnor has sent messages of congratulations to the Black Stars and the Ghana Football Association respectively (GFA) on the recent successes chalked by the team in the World Cup and African Nations Cup qualifiers.

In a fax message sent to the press from his German base, Akunnor said he was overwhelmed with joy by the performance of the team, composed mainly of home based players, in qualifying for Mali 2002 and reviving the World Cup chances of

Ghana.

He said the victory of the Stars over the Lone Stars at their own Monrovia back yard marks a turning point in the resurrection of the Stars and pledged his unalloyed support to the players and the technical team.

"It is no mean achievement to spank Zimbabwe in Harare and quell the ambition of the Lone Stars in Liberia and this is a testimony of the level of commitment the home based Stars are putting into the campaign."

The Wolfsburg midfielder said he is optimistic that the Stars "would pull the chestnut out of the blazing fire" by winning their matches against Sudan in Accra on July 14 and the Super Eagles in Lagos on July 29 and gain a historic qualification to Korea- Japan 2002.

While wishing the team the best of luck in the remaining matches, Akunnor advised the players to keep their calm and remain level headed in order to sustain the triumphal ride that has brought happiness to Ghanaians and given them hope for a World Cup appearance.

The skipper also expressed appreciation to the quality of football being played by the Satellites during the on going World Youth Championship and prayed that they rise up to the occasion when they play Argentina in the final on Sunday.

On the reconstituted Ghana Football Association (GFA) Management Board, headed by Mr Ben Koufie, Akunnor described the team as "very formidable and capable of taking Ghana football to the great heights" and implored them to unite and present a common front in the discharge of their duties.

He said it is only when they remain united that they would be strong enough to face the stiff challenges associated with the office.

Akunnor described Mr Ben Koufie as "a perfect gentleman who is very much knowledgeable in the principles and politics of soccer administration" adding that the presence of Abedi Pele on the board would provide the vital link between the GFA and the players.

He wished them a happy tenure that would be laced with unprecedented successes in the annals of Ghana football.
