Kotoko still winning

Kumasi (Ashanti Region) 06 July 2001

League leaders Kumasi Asante Kotoko on Thursday beat Kwaebibirem 2-0 in their seventh week Star Premier League match played at the Kumasi Sports Stadium      Kotoko kicked-off brilliantly forcing a first minute corner-kick as goalkeeper Jerry Adjei stretched to parry a header by Joe Okyere over the bar.

Kotoko kept the pressure on the goal-area of their opponents earning a penalty in the 14th minute when striker Angelo Dedon was fouled in the box.

Godwin Ablordey kicked the ball to the blind side of the goalkeeper to score the opener for his side.

Kotoko assumed control of the game as they confused their opponents with defence splitting moves forcing their opponents to adopt defensive tactics.

Kotoko's persistent efforts paid off well when Ablordey slotted in his second on the stroke of half time from a rebound after goalkeeper Adjei had failed to make a first time save of a fierce shot.

A downpour, during the recess intensified as the second half started rendering the pitch soggy and making bail control difficult.

Kotoko, who appeared to have mastered the slippery nature of the field, dictated the pace of the game as they ballooned the ball into their opponent's area but could not increase the tally.

Dawu thrash Arsenals

Dawu (Eastern Region) 06 July 2001

Dawu Youngsters continued their winning spree with a 3-0 victory over Berekum

Arsenals in their Star Premier league match played on Thursday at Dawu.

The match watched by a few spectators due to continuous downpour, saw the Dawu boys taking the lead in the 6th minute through their centre-forward Eric Mbroh.

The early lead unsettled the Berekum boys and in the 20th minute, the inside-left for Dawu, Awudu Adama beat their goalkeeper Isaac Zogah, who rushed out of the posts to save a situation, before curling the ball into the empty net for the second goal.

Mbroh worsened the plight of Arsenals when he increased the score line to three for his side in the 24th minute.

After recess, the Berekum boys found their rhythm and managed to contain the attackers of Dawu and lifted their game but could not penetrate deep into their goal area to cause any harm.

The closest that Arsenals came near scoring was on the stroke of full time when their substitute player, Seth Antwi, received a pass right in front of the Dawu posts but blasted the ball straight into the waiting hands of goalkeeper Anthony Amoaful.

Maxbees lick Oly

Koforidua (Eastern Region) 06 July 2001

Suhum Maxbees on Thursday compounded the woes of visiting Accra Great

Olympics, when they beat them 1-0 in their Star Premier league match played at the Koforidua Sports Stadium.

Maxbees took the lead in the 20th minute through Joshua Quarcoopome, who slotted the ball into an empty net when Olympics goalkeeper Sam Addo rushed out of his posts to save a sticky situation and Asamoah Dzifa volleyed the ball over him.

Olympics mounted pressure on the homesters during the second half, but failed to utilise the numerous chances, which came their way due to poor shooting.

Maxbees goalkeeper, Samuel Nartey, who managed to save dangerous shots in the first half was substituted with Saeed Ahmed, at the beginning of the second half due to injuries he sustained in the process.

The few Maxbees fans that doubted the capabilities of Saeed at the beginning changed their minds when he started making some wonderful saves.

Poor weather at Koforidua in the afternoon, however, deprived Maxbees enough revenue from the gates, since only few football fans went to watch the match.

Ishmael hits hat trick as Hearts beat Okwawu

Accra (Greater Accra) 06 July 2001

Hearts' "wonder boy", Ishmael Addo, back from trials with Kiaserslautern, a German first side, scored a hat trick as Hearts struggled to beat visiting Okwawu United 3-2 in their seventh-week Star Premier league match on Thursday.

But, the Accra Sports Stadium nearly recorded another disaster after the May 9 incident as a result of the absence of an ambulance and adequate medical staff.

Okwawu's lateral defender Yonah Sowah, nearly died after an aerial clash with Charles Taylor of Hearts. Players of both teams had to administer first aid to resuscitate the young player until later, two nurses of the Stadium clinic appeared on the scene.

Even when they did come, it was clear from where the press were sitting that there was little they could do, to save the player till some officials rushed him out of the Stadium to seek medical attention.

Kumasi-based FIFA referee, Osei Nsiah's bizarre officiating flaired up tempers resorting to reckless tackles by players.

Ishmael shot Hearts ahead with two clinical goals in the eighth and 43rd minutes but the defence men of Hearts could not hold on to the lead after the break.

Okwawu's resurgence after the recess was obvious as they drew rings around the Accra team forcing them to run after their shadows.

Ace striker Ernest Boateng round up the Hearts defence including goalkeeper James Nanor in the 59th minute to pull one back and sent the Stadium dead in the 73rd minute with a non-drop volley to put the two teams on level.

But the wonder boy brought the smiles back on the faces of the Phobians when he clinched the match winner from a left-footed shot inside the six-yard box.

Soccer-Goldfields beat Hasmal

Obuasi (Ashanti Region) 06 July 2001

Obuasi Goldfields Thursday beat visiting Hasaacas 3-2 at the Len Clay Stadium but gave no room for their supporters to celebrate the victory because of the way they allowed the visitors to finish the game, scoring two goals in the final minutes of the game.

Goldfields who took a commanding 2-0 lead at half time would have finished the game with a sweet 3-0 victory but surprisingly relaxed, allowing Hasaacas to score two quick goals in the 81st and 90th minutes.

The miners shot into the lead in the 4th minute when inside-right Robert Amoako beat keeper Yaw Kumapre with a 40-metre drive.

In the 10th minute, Nana Arhin Duah who had earlier thrown two glaring chances away netted the second goal after receiving a pass from Eric Boakye.

Goldfields piled up pressure and could have raised the tally to three in the 30th minute but Aminu Musah  drove a terrific shot against the side netting with a yawning goal in front of him.

Hasaacas lifted their game but they only concentrated their possession around the centre circle and on the few occasions they tried to penetrate the rear guard of Goldfields, the tight defence of the homesters, pivoted around Kofi Amoako, Princeton Owusu-Ansah, Yaw Owusu and Eric Boakye held them in check.

The Sekondi side substituted Osei Kuffuor with Frank Turkson but that could not change the score line till recess.

On resumption, Hasaacas brought in Eric Ackon for Mohammed Isaa but it was Goldfields Robert Amoako who tested the visitors' keeper with a power-laden shot in the 46th minute.

In the 59th minute, Goldfields Stephen Amo's harmless kick from the centre circle beat confused Kumapre for the miners' third goal.

As everything was pointing to a sweet 3-0 victory, Goldfields played it soft, allowing Kingsley Kwarteng and substitute Turkson to redeem two goals to the disappointment of the home fans.
